The Minnesota Golden Gophers have quietly built one of the most Over-friendly win total profiles in the Big Ten, and the 2026 number suggests oddsmakers still haven't fully caught up to it.

Minnesota went 7-5 overall and 5-4 in Big Ten play in 2025, clearing its win total for the second straight year. With a modest number set for 2026, the Gophers enter the season as one of the more intriguing value plays in the conference if recent history is any guide.

Here's a look at the recent history of Minnesota win totals, along with predictions on whether the Gophers will surpass or fall short of their 2026 number of 6.5*:

Brad Powers

The Gophers are much improved this year with 14 returning starters. I bet over 5.5 wins earlier this off-season. However, it should be noted that Minnesota somehow won eight games last year despite being -0.5 in yards per play (No. 101). I would lean under 6.5 wins at current.

Rob Paul

There’s a decent chance Minnesota is a better football team this year than last year, but ends up winning fewer games. While the Golden Gophers’ schedule is just No. 86 in SOS (.513), it’s being pulled down by their three non-conference games, and Purdue, UCLA, and Wisconsin – and the Bruins and Badgers will both be better this year. The other six teams on their schedule combined to win 65.5% of their games.

So while PJ Fleck’s squad has one of the most underrated QBs in the country (Drake Lindsey), a potential All-American offensive lineman (Greg Johnson), a workhorse running back (Darius Taylor), and a likely top 30 defense that features future NFL players in Anthony Smith and Kerry Brown, it looks like Minnesota will be fighting for bowl eligibility.

That is, unless the Gophers finally field an offense that’s in the top half of the Big Ten.

Colby Marchio

One thing about PJ Fleck: he loves to go bowling.

Fleck always has his boys ready to compete every single week, regardless of whether they are outmatched or not. His teams consistently perform above expectations, no matter how much talent they have on paper.

With Drake Lindsey coming off a solid freshman season, year two should bring a massive improvement. On the defensive side, they bring back star defensive end Anthony Smith, who nearly left for the draft but decided to return as the centerpiece of this unit.

In Fleck we trust.

Keeping the HC, OC, DC and QB from one season to the next is rare in P4 football these days.  Fleck’s Gophers have that.

The schedule alternates to “tough” this fall, which tempers expectations a little, but if QB Drake Lindsey builds on last year’s freshman campaign and the DL plays up to the hype - 6.5 wins is a snap.

🔑 Key takeaways

  • One of the best Over profiles in the conference: Minnesota has gone Over its win total six times in the nine graded seasons shown, against just two Unders and a push. It's a genuinely strong long-term trend.

  • Consistent under Fleck: Every graded season from 2019 through 2025 has resulted in either an Over or a push; the Gophers haven't missed their win total since 2017, a span covering six straight cleared or pushed numbers.

  • The market has started pricing in the trend: Minnesota's win total Over has carried increasingly heavy juice in recent years, including -200 in 2025, suggesting oddsmakers have caught on to the program's reliability at hitting modest numbers.

How Minnesota win totals are priced

The Gophers' 2026 win total is one of the few to reward Over bettors without asking them to take a major leap of faith.

Expectations are dampened industry-wide for Minnesota in the always-challenging Big Ten Conference, but this team has managed to pull out more than its share of 7+-win seasons in recent years. And if you think Minnesota can get there again, you're getting an intriguing +150 on the O6.5 win threshold.

Minnesota does get to dodge three of the top four teams from last year's Big East standings (Ohio State, Oregon, USC) and has a fairly friendly non-conference sked.

Its Big Ten win total sits at 3.5, with the Over at +100 and the Under at -120.

Did You Know?

Minnesota's biggest win total beat in this dataset came in 2019, when the Gophers were set at 7.5 wins and stormed to a 10-2 record – the program's best season in decades.
