The Michigan Wolverines enter 2026 with a win total that practically dares bettors to bet against history, the latest challenge for a program that has cleared expectations far more often than it's fallen short.

Michigan won nine games and finished 7-2 in Big Ten play in 2025, keeping the Wolverines firmly in the national conversation even in a transition year. With a win total of 8.5 for 2026, oddsmakers are pricing in some uncertainty – but Michigan's long-term track record suggests betting against the Maize and Blue at a modest number has rarely been the smart play.

Here's a look at the recent history of Michigan win totals, along with predictions on whether the Wolverines will surpass or fall short of their 2026 number of 8.5:

Obviously, Kyle Whittingham is a big upgrade over the disgraced Sherrone Moore. However, Michigan plays one of the toughest schedules in the country, including four Top 10 teams (Oklahoma, Indiana, at Oregon and at Ohio State).

I don’t think quarterback Bryce Underwood will improve enough. I gave out under 8.5 wins earlier this off-season and still lean that way with the heavy juice.

At Utah, Kyle Whittingham won 9+ regular season games in five of the last seven seasons (excluding the pandemic-shortened year), and he brings several key contributors from last year’s Utes team that went 11-2 – Michigan is top 20 in returning production as a result (63%).

Offensive coordinator Jason Beck’s creativity turned Devon Dampier into a star for Utah, and he should get more out of former No. 1 recruit Bryce Underwood, especially his mobility. The Wolverines aren’t lacking for playmakers either, with All-Big Ten running back Jordan Marshall, freshman All-American wide receiver Andrew Marsh, and major additions in five-star recruit Savion Hiter and transfer JJ Buchanan (Utah).

The defense is a bigger question, but coordinator Jay Hill fielded back-to-back top 25 defenses at BYU. He also inherits a loaded secondary and adds several key players from Utah, led by John Henry Daley and Smith Snowden.

Colby Marchio

With all the craziness that went down this offseason in Ann Arbor, there has actually been a lot of good to come out of it.

First and foremost, bringing in former Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham is a massive move. Whittingham spent 21 years leading the Utes, building one of the most respected programs in the country. During that same span, Michigan went through nine different coaches and interim coaches.

Whittingham brings a winning culture and stability to Ann Arbor, and it already seems like standout recruit and now sophomore quarterback Bryce Underwood believes in the new direction. After a very underwhelming freshman season, Underwood is staying put with the Wolverines.

Can you blame the kid?

With a full offseason in the new system, I expect Underwood to take a massive step forward, and Michigan should have a very productive season under Whittingham.

It all starts with coaching for me. Kyle Whittingham is a proven coach and the Wolverines finally have adults in the room.

Both OC Jason Beck and DC Jay Hill are proven, and should get a lot out of the young talent. Bryce Underwood is the key, but between a strong rushing attack and an improved defense, I see nine wins this season.

🔑 Key takeaways

  • A genuine Over machine in recent years: Michigan has hit the Over in four of the last five graded seasons (2025, 2023, 2022, 2021), including back-to-back 12-win campaigns in 2022 and 2023 that blew well past the number.

  • The long-term picture tells a different story: Despite the recent Over trend, Michigan's full 19-year sample actually leans Under, going 8-9-2 against its win total since 2005. The recent stretch is a meaningful departure from the program's longer-term history.

  • The market has taken notice: Michigan's win total has been priced at Over-favored odds in five of the last six seasons (including 2026), reflecting growing confidence from oddsmakers that the Wolverines are a high-floor program even in years with quarterback or coaching uncertainty.

How Michigan win totals are priced

You'd be forgiven for taking a second look at the Wolverines' regular season win total. And yes, it does seem a bit low at first glance.

Michigan has won 8+ games in nine of the last 10 graded seasons, with five double-digit showings over that span. But the combination of key position shuffles – including a new head coach in Kyle Whittingham and a new offensive coordinator in Jason Beck – and a grueling schedule have made pessimists out of experts, fans and sportsbooks alike.

If you're feeling bullish on the team's chances, you can also look at the Over on the Wolverines' Big Ten win total, which is set at 5.5. The Over is +115, while the Under is -136.

Did You Know?

Michigan has previously seen -170 or lower odds twice on its regular-season win total, going 1-1 O/U in those campaigns.

What's the best bet for Michigan this season?

Based on our expert consensus, the OVER is the stronger play, though Brad Powers is leaning more toward the Under.
