Two Playoff darkhorses meeting in a non-conference matchup in Week 2 may be a college football fan’s version of an ideal world. And that is the best way to describe both the Michigan Wolverines and the Oklahoma Sooners right now.
For context, FanDuel currently lists the Wolverines at +225 and the Sooners at +330 to make the College Football Playoff.
My Michigan vs. Oklahoma predictions expect the Sooners’ odds to shorten after a win this weekend. Check out my SGP play for this game, with kickoff coming at 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, September 6.
Our best Michigan vs Oklahoma SGP for Week 2
The Michigan Wolverines unsurprisingly leaned on the ground game to get past New Mexico last week, and winning 34-17 while being a 34.5-point home favorite should be considered just “getting past.” Expect the Wolverines to lean on the run again at the Oklahoma Sooners as a means of protecting freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood from a confusing Brent Venables defense.
That should set up Michigan running back Justice Haynes to add to his three touchdowns from last weekend, while also opening the door for Oklahoma’s passing game to rule the day.
A semi-efficient aerial attack will almost always outpace all but the most efficient rushing attacks. With Washington State transfer quarterback John Mateer directing the offense, the Sooners have such an aerial attack.
New Mexico had enough passing success against Michigan — finding success on 43% of designed dropbacks, perhaps an innocuous number on the surface but very much a concerning one when you consider the matchup — that Mateer should enjoy his day.
