The Georgia Bulldogs begin their 2025 season between the hedges when they host Marshall at Sanford Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Kirby Smart’s team once again looks to be a title contender, and he’s reloaded his offense with plenty of weapons. The Herd are still recovering from a mass exodus that cost them a bowl game appearance, and have plenty of unknowns coming into this season.

Read on to find out why I like Gunner Stockton to have a big day in my Marshall vs. Georgia predictions and college football picks for Saturday, August 30.

Marshall vs Georgia prediction

Marshall vs Georgia Best bet: Gunner Stockton Over 255.5 passing yards (-114)

If you take a gander at Georgia’s previous games against non-P5 schools under Kirby Smart, you’ll see that he’s not afraid to let his quarterback post big numbers. Carson Beck threw for at least 283 yards over the previous two seasons in games against UMass, Ball State, and UT Martin.

Only against Tennessee Tech last season, when he threw for 242 yards, did he fail to top 250 yards, but Stockton came in and threw for 90 in relief. And with his 234-yard performance in the CFP against Notre Dame, I’m expecting him to put up big numbers against Marshall.

It’s not just because Smart will want him to build confidence and rapport with a wide receiver room that has added Zacariah Branch. It’s also because Marshall is a program in flux after the departure of Charlie Huff and 25 players hitting the transfer portal.

Marshall has added 60 new players and will have just four returning players combined in their starting units. The Herd will struggle on both sides of the ball and will be overwhelmed by the Georgia talent.

That means plenty of first-half drives for the Bulldogs, and Stockton will take advantage of them. In addition, there’s little doubt that Smart will want to give his quarterback the opportunity to throw downfield, and Marshall’s secondary will give up big plays to the likes of Branch and Dillon Bell.

Marshall vs Georgia same-game parlay

Our SGP sees us trying to find the perfect middle play. The spread has come down a bit from 40 points, and we’ll take Georgia -38.5 here.

The Bulldogs tend to close games out strong under Smart when facing teams outside the Power 5, and the backups will do more than enough to extend the lead. I like Georgia to win by 42 points.

Each of Georgia’s last four season openers has seen them allow no more than a touchdown, with three opponents scoring exactly three points. Marshall is going to struggle to find points of any kind, and Smart has never been one to humiliate an opponent by the likes of 50 points.

Our deep-ball SGP: TEASER

  • Branch is a big-play receiver, and he’s joining a strong Georgia receiving corps. Smart will want to see what his new addition can do, and Stockton will connect with him a few times for some big plays.
  • Stockton should be good for at least a pair of touchdown throws against the rebuilding Marshall secondary. He’s got too many weapons at his disposal that can stretch the field, and make plays after the catch.
