I like the energy of new head coach Will Stein but I wasn’t thrilled with his coordinator hires. The Wildcats only return six starters and play one of the toughest schedules in the country. My ratings project them to be underdogs in 10 games.

It’s a bad break for Kentucky that its schedule is so tough because Will Stein was a perfect hire for this program. However, Year 1 could be rough with the Wildcats’ schedule ranked 11th-hardest in SOS (.606) and the team sitting just 98th in returning production (46%).
Stein landed a perfect QB to develop in Notre Dame transfer Kenny Minchey, but the former blue-chip recruit has just 29 career pass attempts. He’ll also be leaning on a transfer-heavy group of playmakers led by Nic Anderson (LSU) and CJ Baxter (Texas). And while the offensive line beefed up with big transfer additions, including Lance Heard (Tennessee), it could take a while to mesh.
The defense is also expected to start at least five transfers, with Tavion Gadson and Ty Bryant being the only returning players with all-conference ceilings. Stein’s team will be a lot more dangerous in Year 2.

Kentucky fired Mark Stoops, brought in 36-year-old Will Stein, who then hired 23 new coaches and brought in 36 new players. On top of that, they plan on changing both their offensive and defensive schemes.
The 2026 Kentucky Wildcats are going to have a completely new look this season. However, as fun and exciting as that is for the fans and alumni, that is simply too much change for me to buy into without any proof of success on the horizon.
