Virginia has failed to live up to expectations since its explosive August win over NC State. Coming off another disappointing loss to SMU, can the Cavaliers turn things around against Duke?

Duke and Virginia square off Friday night in Charlottesville, Virginia, with both ACC rivals looking to bounce back from disappointing losses.

My Duke vs. Virginia prediction backs the Blue Devils to cover against a Cavaliers team that has struggled to live up to expectations.

Check out my latest college football picks ahead of this Friday, Oct. 23 kickoff at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN.

TOP PICK
Who will win Duke vs Virginia: Duke +1.5

Has the conversation about the 2026 Virginia Cavaliers being bad started yet? If not, I’ll start it. This football team has done absolutely nothing since demolishing NC State in Week 0. It has just three other wins, against the powerhouses of Delaware, Norfolk State, and Syracuse.

Virginia has an 11-point loss to West Virginia as an 11.5-point favorite, along with a 31-point loss to Florida State despite entering that game as a favorite. This past weekend, the Cavaliers lost by 10 to SMU as 9.5-point underdogs. This isn't a good football team, and I’m leaning heavily on Duke in this matchup.

The Blue Devils are coming off back-to-back losses as favorites, but they were a perfect 4-0 straight up and against the spread before those defeats to North Carolina and Georgia Tech. Most notably, Duke pulled off an outright win over Illinois as a 6.5-point underdog.

Virginia leans heavily on its ground attack, running the ball more than 40 times per game. Duke’s run defense has been exceptional at limiting opponents on the ground, allowing just 107.6 yards per game, ranking 24th nationally.

Getting any points with this Duke team is great! While +3 would be ideal, I fully endorse taking whatever points you can get.

Covers COVERS INTEL: Duke has dominated time of possession this season, averaging more than 33 minutes per game (ranked 10th), while its opponents average just over 26 minutes. The Blue Devils are controlling the clock and holding the ball for nearly seven more minutes per game than their opponents.

Duke vs Virginia Over/Under pick: Under 47.5

Playable down to 45.5.

Both teams lean on the ground game, which could keep the clock running from start to finish. Plus, the Blue Devils have done a great job shutting down opposing rushing attacks. If the Cavaliers have to pivot away from the ground game and throw the ball, they haven't been particularly efficient, which could lead to turnovers.

Overall, both defensive units are allowing fewer than 23 points and 340 yards per game. Duke will also have its hands full if it looks to pass, as it will be met by a very solid Virginia secondary that ranks 18th in opponent passing yards per game and fifth in opponent completion percentage.

Duke vs Virginia combo

Both offenses are run-heavy and lack urgency, setting up a slower-paced game with clock-draining drives and plenty of punts. Duke should keep this one competitive, while both unders benefit from limited scoring opportunities. Combining Duke +2.5, Under 47.5, and first-half Under 23.5 offers a 4.80x payout on Friday night.

Duke vs Virginia combo

  • Duke +2.5
  • Under 47.5
  • 1H Under 23.5

Duke vs Virginia prop: 1H Under 23.5

The clock should keep running throughout the first half given how run-heavy these two offenses are. Plus, neither team plays with much urgency, especially over its first three drives.

Duke ranks 81st in seconds per play over its first three drives, while Virginia ranks 117th out of 138 teams. Overall, Duke ranks 88th in situation-adjusted pace, while Virginia sits at 104th.

Expect long drives that devour the clock and plenty of punts.
