What does Duke head coach Manny Diaz have up his sleeve in 2026?

Duke went 7-5 in the 2025 regular season, finishing 6-2 in ACC play and clearing a 6.5-win total for the program’s fourth consecutive Over. The Blue Devils have quietly become one of the most reliable Over plays in the ACC under Diaz and predecessor Mike Elko, and the market has responded by setting the 2026 total at a number that reflects (surprisingly?) modest expectations for a program that has outperformed its line in each of the last four seasons.

Here’s a look at the recent history of Duke win totals, along with predictions on whether the Blue Devils will surpass or fall short of their 2026 number of 5.5:

Last year Duke won the ACC for the first time since 1989. However, despite winning nine games, they were out-gained on the season. They also unexpectedly lost their starting QB Darian Mensah late in the transfer portal process. I only project them to be favored in five games.

For the third time in his three years as Duke head coach, Manny Diaz is starting a new transfer QB. The loss of Darian Mensah to Miami shocked a Blue Devils team that just won the ACC Championship, but Walker Eget was a sneaky good replacement. He’s an aggressive downfield passer who was third nationally in big-time throw rate (7.0%) at San Jose State.

Diaz also retained one of the best running backs in the country in Nate Sheppard, and linebacker Luke Mergott is back to lead the defense. While the schedule is tough, Diaz is one hell of a coach and can get this team bowl-eligible.

Colby Marchio

Yes, it is because of Darian Mensah’s departure, and the Blue Devils are now leaning on a redshirt freshman quarterback to lead them to another ACC Championship.

Sure, head coach Manny Diaz has done a tremendous job over the last three seasons finding under the radar players and building them into key contributors for successful seasons. Despite his 18-9 record as head coach and everything he has proven, I am still leaning under.

When I read, “With Mensah gone, the Blue Devils have a solid Plan B by the name of Nate Sheppard,” (ESPN) I had to take a second look. Their replacement plan for Mensah is a running back? I’m good.

Year Win Total Over Under Actual Wins Result
2025 6.5 -200 +165 7 Over
2024 5.5 +150 -185 9 Over
2023 6 -130 +110 7 Over
2022 3 -110 -110 8 Over
2021 4 -105 -115 3 Under
2019 5.5 +100 -120 5 Under
2018 6 -150 +130 7 Over

🔑 Key takeaways

  • A dominant Over lean in a small sample: Duke has gone Over its win total five times in seven graded seasons, against just two Unders and no pushes – the strongest Over lean of any program in this series, though this dataset only goes back to 2018.

  • Four consecutive Overs from 2022 through 2025: Duke has cleared its win total in each of the last four seasons, the longest active Over streak among ACC programs in this dataset. The market has repeatedly set the bar below what the Blue Devils have delivered under Elko and Diaz.

  • Both Unders came before the Elko era: Duke’s only two Under results (2019, 2021) both predate Elko’s arrival in 2022.

How Duke win totals are priced

How does a team that has averaged nearly eight wins per season over the last four years get slapped with a meager regular-season win number of 5.5?

Let's start on the offensive side of the football, where the Blue Devils will start 2026 without its No. 1 quarterback and top three receivers from last season. Standout QB Darren Mensah will be missed the most, as Duke turns to either Walker Eget or Dan Mahan.

And then there's the schedule, which features one of the most difficult road slates of any ACC team. Virginia, NC State, Miami and Wake Forest will all host the Blue Devils over their final six games of the regular season.

Oddsmakers have Duke's ACC win total at 4.5, with the Over at +125 and the Under at -150.

Did You Know?

Duke’s 2022 win total was set at just 3 (the lowest in this dataset) and the Blue Devils won 8, a five-win Over beat that remains the largest single-season margin among ACC teams.
