California made a solid first impression in its Atlantic Coast Conference debut, and that has expectations a little higher going into 2026.
California went 7-5 in 2025, its first season in the ACC, comfortably clearing a 5.5-win total and giving the program a winning record in a new conference after years of decline on the West Coast.
The market has responded by raising the 2026 total to 6.5, a pick’em line that sets up a meaningful test of whether the Bears can sustain that momentum or revert to the Under trend that has defined most of this dataset.
Here’s a look at the recent history of California win totals, along with predictions on whether the Bears will surpass or fall short of their 2026 number of 6.5:

Brad Powers
My power ratings only project 5.4 wins for the California Golden Bears this season. That disparity vs. their 6.5-win total is one of the biggest in all of my power ratings this year regardless of conference.
The Bears have a brand new first-time head coach in Tosh Lupoi. When you factor in a schedule that includes tricky non-conference games vs. UCLA and at UNLV, my ratings only project Cal to be a clear favorite (more than three points) in two games (vs. Wagner and Stanford).
Rob Paul
There’s a lot of reason to believe in this Cal team, but no reason is bigger than Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele. He’s the most talented QB the Golden Bears have had since Jared Goff, and new head coach Tosh Lupoi did more than just retain JKS.
Lupoi went to work in the transfer portal to add talent all around his young QB, with players like Ian Strong (Rutgers), Chase Hendricks (Ohio), Adam Mohammed (Washington), and Dorian Thomas (New Mexico). Those transfer wins boosted Cal to No. 11 nationally in returning offensive production (70%).
Lupoi also added plenty to his defense, too, by bringing defensive tackle Jericho Johnson and safety Kingston Lopa with him from Oregon and adding players like cornerback Daniel Harris (Georgia) and Ricky Fletcher (Ole Miss). Cal’s schedule isn’t overwhelming either, ranking 79th in SOS (.523).
Colby Marchio
Ah yes, your uncle’s favorite ACC team, Cal.
I like the number and the price here. The Golden Bears avoiding Miami, Louisville, and Florida State could provide a major boost to their win total, and a lot of people believe this could be Cal’s first eight win season since 2019.
There has been a lot of praise surrounding first year head coach Tosh Lupoi, and rightfully so. Add in future NFL quarterback Jaron Keawe Sagapolutele, who is coming off a promising freshman season, and there is a lot of optimism surrounding this program.
The defense should once again be the strength of this team, and if Sagapolutele can continue to develop, Cal could make a serious leap and become a very dangerous team in the ACC.

Tosh Lupoi looks like he's reinvigorated the energy out in the East Bay Area. His call for the area to pack Memorial Stadium ahead of the UCLA opener is a clear sign he's that confident in this Golden Bears team.
Cal can soar high if quarterback Jaron Keawe-Sagapolutele gets improved protection on offense, but everything else is in place to make early noise in Lupoi's first season as head coach.
Thomas Dunn, Golden Bear Report (On3)
Cal has brought in a lot of skill position talent offensively and I expect that to take them to heights they weren't able to reach on a consistent basis last year. The big question is how do a lot of these first time head coaches mesh and how does the defense full of raw, untapped potential take those next steps. Talent has increased but they have to prove it

🔑 Key takeaways
- A clear Under lean overall: California has gone Under its win total seven times in 13 graded seasons, against four Overs and two Pushes. The Bears' consistent lean toward the Under has held across multiple coaching staffs and conference settings.
- All four Overs came when the total was set at 6 or below: Every time California has cleared its win total, the market set the bar at 6 wins or fewer (5, 5.5, 5.5, and 6). In six graded seasons where the total was 6.5 or higher, the Bears went 0-6 Under. The 2026 total of 6.5 puts Cal squarely in Under territory by this measure.
- Two of the last three graded seasons ended Over: California cleared its win total in 2023 and 2025 after falling short in 2022 and 2021, suggesting the program has found some footing at lower market expectations (though the 2024 Under at 6.5 is a direct precedent for the number the Bears now face again).
How California win totals are priced
With a solid Year 1 of its ACC tenure in the books, California will now look to end a bizarre stretch in which it has consistently wilted under increased pressure.
Moving past the six-win Vegas threshold usually spells doom for the Golden Bears, but fans and bettors have reason for optimism in 2026. Oddsmakers have the Bears at +125 to win 7+ games, and opening with three non-conference games vs. opponents who were a combined 11-25 last season bodes well.
New head coach Tosh Lupoi was given the most favorable schedule he could have hoped for in conference play, avoiding Miami, Georgia Tech, Florida State, Louisville and Duke. That should result in plenty of action on the Over 4.5 ACC wins, which is set at +115; Cal went 4-4 in conference matchups last year.
California’s 2012 season produced the largest Under miss in this dataset. Set at 6.5 wins, the Bears finished 3-9, falling three and a half wins short of the total.
