Remember, Los Angeles Clippers, it can always get worse. As bad as it feels to be 6-18 outright and ahead of only the Pelicans in the Western Conference standings, it can get worse. And, frankly, it probably will.

This tailspin should continue against the Houston Rockets tonight.

My Clippers vs. Rockets predictions and NBA picks expect Houston to take advantage of one of the best trends in the NBA, betting against Los Angeles.

Clippers vs Rockets prediction

Clippers vs Rockets best bet: Rockets -9.5 (-110)

The season may be only 29.3% over for the Los Angeles Clippers, but that is enough time to point out that L.A. is on pace to be the worst NBA team against the spread since sports gambling became regulated in the U.S.

For that matter, the Clippers have a cushion in this ignominious pursuit, 7-17 ATS and on pace to go 24-58 ATS, four games worse than Philadelphia’s mark from last year.

This continues an odd trend, every season one team seemingly having high hopes and then oddsmakers never able to keep up with a tailspin. Two years ago, the Hawks stumbled to a 29-53 ATS record.

Then last year, the 76ers’ injuries allowed them to enjoy a late dive beyond comprehension, finishing 28-54 ATS despite the Suns spending most of the season in pursuit of Atlanta’s mark.

Now it's L.A.'s turn, able to blame both injuries and incompetence.

Clippers vs Rockets same-game parlay

Both the Clippers (hitting the Under in five of their last six games) and the Houston Rockets (hitting the Under in seven of their last nine) have been Under teams of late despite being distinctly Over teams to start the season; L.A. cashed 11 Overs in its first 16 games, and Houston did so in 10 of its first 12.

Credit Houston's defense, which has the No. 2 defensive rating in the NBA on the season at 110.7 and has improved upon that in the last 10 games, specifically, dropping it to 108.6.

Clippers vs Rockets SGP

  • Rockets -9.5
  • Under 222.5
  • James Harden Under 23.5 points

Our "from downtown" SGP: Harden in Hell

While the Rockets have a defense that would get all the headlines if, ya know, the Thunder did not exist, this Clippers defense ranks No. 23 in defensive rating in the last 10 games at 118.8 and No. 25 on the season at 118.6. Expecting Houston’s underrated post presence to score some points should hardly be bold.

It may seem bold to doubt Harden both in points and in assists, but realize he's fallen short of both these marks in the same game in two of his last four games.

Clippers vs Rockets SGP

  • Rockets -9.5
  • Under 222.5
  • Alperen Sengun Over 21.5 points
  • James Harden Under 23.5 points
  • James Harden Under 8.5 assists

Clippers vs Rockets odds

  • Spread: Clippers +9.5 | Rockets -9.5
  • Moneyline: Clippers +325 | Rockets -425
  • Over/Under: Over 222.5 | Under 222.5

Douglas Farmer spends his days thinking about college football and his nights thinking about the NBA. His betting habits and coverage follow that same pattern. He covered Notre Dame football for various outlets from 2008 to 2024, most notably spending eight seasons as NBC Sports’ beat writer on the Irish. That was also when his gambling focus took off. Knowing there were veteran beat writers with three decades more experience than he had, Douglas found his niche by best recognizing Notre Dame’s standing in each year’s national landscape, a complex tapestry most easily understood and remembered via betting odds.

In 2021, that interest created a freelance opportunity with Covers, a role that eventually led to Douglas joining the company full-time in 2023. In the fall, Douglas will place five or six dozen bets each week, a disproportionate amount via BetRivers because the operator tends to have lines slightly different than the rest of the market. The same can be said of Circa Sports’ futures markets.

While Douglas is an avid NBA fan and covers the league throughout the year, the vast majority of his bets are on college football, because that is the biggest key to sports betting: Know what you do not know.
