Yankees vs A's betting preview

Starting pitchers

Domingo German (2-2, 3.89 ERA): Making just his eighth start of the season since returning from a shoulder injury, German’s numbers are not yet indicative of how dominant he has been. In his first start back from injury on July 21, German got shelled against the Astros, one of the best lineups in baseball. However, German has settled in nicely since that outing, going 2-1 with a 2.84 ERA and 1.19 WHIP. German mixes in four pitches, not relying too heavily on any of them. His most effective pitch is the sinker, with opponents hitting a mere .167 against it.

Adam Oller (2-6, 6.41 ERA): Taking the mound for the Athletics is rookie right-hander Adam Oller. While it has been a tough rookie campaign for Oller as he bounces back-and-forth between the rotation and the bullpen, he has found more success in his most recent re-admission into the rotation. Over his last three starts, Oller is 1-1 with a 3.24 ERA. Possessing a diverse six-pitch arsenal, Oller has shown the ability to keep hitters on their toes with his unpredictability.

Yankees vs A's picks and predictions

Our side and total predictions are based upon our analysis of the line and total in this game. Our best bet is our favorite pick across all markets.

Run line analysis

The New York Yankees have appeared to exit the post All-Star game drought as they have now won five straight games, with four of those five wins coming by at least a two-run margin. Meanwhile, the Oakland Athletics have now lost four of their last five games with three of those four losses coming by at least a two-run margin.

We should expect these trends to continue with right-hander Domingo German slated to take the mound for New York.

As mentioned in the starting pitcher section, he enters this game in tremendous form as he continues to regather himself following a long hiatus to start the season. This strong play should continue against Oakland.

While it is a small sample size, this current A's roster possesses a mere .161 xBA, .237 xSLG, and .249 xwOBA through 13 career plate appearances against German. When facing right-handed pitching this season, Oakland possesses a .211 BA and .276 OBP.

Following German is a very strong bullpen. This season, the Yankees’ relief pitching boasts a 3.01 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, .205 BA, and .295 OBP.

Since Gerrit Cole went over seven innings last night, the majority of New York’s bullpen should be available for this game, including Lucas Luetge, Clarke Schmidt, and Ron Marinaccio. With the strong pitching available, Oakland should struggle to generate any offense with its awful lineup.

In fact, outside of Seth Brown and Sean Murphy, all seven of its other projected starters possess a .235 or lower xBA. New York needs to continue to get its confidence back up following that dreadful stretch in July/August, and a series against the Athletics is a perfect opportunity to continue to do so.

Prediction: Yankees -1.5 (-125 at WynnBET)

Over/Under analysis

While the Yankees' pitching staff should shut the Athletics down, their lineup may struggle to generate runs against right-hander Adam Oller. As mentioned in the starting pitcher section, Oller has started to find more success in his most recent promotion to the starting rotation.

We should expect this strong pitching to continue against New York, a team that has not registered a hit against Oller through his 2 1-3 innings pitched against them this season as a reliever. Based on his metrics in that performance, we should not expect any positive regression from this Yankees roster as it generated a mere .027 xBA, .030 xSLG, and .321 xwOBA over those two matchups.

Additionally, New York does not hit right-handers as well as lefties, evidenced by its .237 BA and .323 OBP this season. We are getting a generous number on the total because of how powerful the Yanks lineup is.

However, even during this recent pick up in success over the last week, New York’s offense has still been relatively quiet as it has scored four or fewer runs in four of its five games. Even if New York’s offense succeeds against an untrustworthy Oakland pitching staff, German should be able to limit its offense to almost nothing.

Getting value by taking the Under in Yankees’ games has been present due to their combination of strong pitching and below-expected hitting, evidenced by the Under going 7-3 over their last 10 games.

Prediction: Under 8 (-110 at Caesars)

Best bet

With all that being said, we can find better bets than the Yankees’ run line because Oller has been pitching better, and I could see him potentially limiting their offense. I am also not confident enough to take the Under due to the fact that the Yankees' offense could still explode, especially when they get to Oakland’s bullpen.

The one play I am most confident in is for New York’s right-hander to continue to see success. Allowing one or fewer earned runs in three of his last four starts, we should expect German’s strong pitching to continue against one of the worst lineups in baseball.

This is a great matchup for German, especially considering that the Athletics have seven right-handed hitters slated to start for this game. Looking at the first two games of this series, right-handers Gerrit Cole and Jameson Taillon each allowed just one earned run against this Oakland lineup while going six or more innings.

Domingo German Prop Pick: Under 1.5 earned runs allowed (+106)
