The Los Angeles Dodgers are clinging to a slim lead in the division, and now will have to take care of business this week in Colorado against one of the worst teams in baseball.

While they won’t have a clear idea of what they’re getting from their pitching staff, we’ll explain in our Rockies vs. Dodgers predictions why this game still projects to be one where L.A. can score enough to cash us in on the total.

Without further ado, let’s hand out some MLB picks for Monday, September 8.

Rockies vs Dodgers prediction

Rockies vs Dodgers best bet: Over 9 (-115)

The Los Angeles Dodgers are in a strange part of the season, sitting just one game up on the San Diego Padres in first place but attempting to ready themselves for October. That’s why Tyler Glasnow was scratched from his scheduled start last week, after he experienced some discomfort, and while he’s expected back in this series, we simply don’t know when.

Glasnow may start tonight if he’s feeling up to the task, and that would be tremendous news for the righty. As a heavy strikeout pitcher, checking in with another splendid 29% K-rate through 68 2/3 innings this season, he would step into a great matchup against a Colorado Rockies team that is still striking out in roughly a quarter of their plate appearances over the last two weeks.

Most critically, too, the Rockies aren’t a team that walks much — ranking third to last in the last two weeks — meaning Glasnow’s frequent issues in this area should be mitigated. The same goes for his struggles against the home run, too, given Colorado sets up as a heavy contact team with just 10 round-trippers in the last two weeks.

Now, we’re not certain Glasnow will start here — and the Dodgers’ bullpen continues to look gassed with a good, not great, 3.25 ERA in the last 14 days. They’ve been worked to the bone, and even if Glasnow goes, it’s unlikely Dave Roberts will fully stretch him out.

That’s all to say, I think this should be a high-scoring game. The Dodgers are excellent against velocity, and that’s just about all that Chase Dollander can bring to the table. The rookie has now worked 93 innings to a 6.77 ERA, and while he does pitch in Colorado, the poor 18.2% strikeout rate and 11.1% walk rate won’t play anywhere.

Rockies vs Dodgers same-game parlay (SGP)

There is no hotter man on the Dodgers than Mookie Betts right now; the veteran has recorded two hits in back-to-back games and owns an extra-base hit in four straight now. He stands as the Dodgers’ best option versus high heat, ranking first in average and expected average against fastballs at 97 mph or higher, and he’s more likely to swing than most other Dodgers, which takes away the liability that Dollander’s walk rate brings here.

I also don’t see Dollander hitting this number, or hanging around long enough to do so. He did strike out five Dodgers the last time they faced him, but he also surrendered seven earned runs over 3 2/3 frames. L.A. isn’t striking out like it did early last month, either, bringing the strikeout rate down to 22.2% in the last  14 days. He lacks the swing-and-miss ability to survive.
