The New York Mets are sending reliever-turned-starter Clay Holmes to the hill in Game 2 of this series against the Boston Red Sox.

Tonight's Mets vs. Red Sox predictions see him as the perfect option to get back in the win column.

I dig into why Holmes has the edge at Fenway Park with my MLB picks for Tuesday, May 20.

My Mets vs Red Sox best bet: Clay Holmes to record a win (+160 at bet365)

Clay Holmes left the New York Yankees this past offseason for a chance to be a starting pitcher with the crosstown New York Mets, and it’s gone very well so far.

The right-hander got the Opening Day call and he’s gone 5-2 with a 3.14 ERA. Holmes has 48 strikeouts in 48 2/3 innings while walking 17.

The 32-year-old has won two of his last three outings, beating the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals in a pair of quality starts. He went six innings in each appearance, allowing a combined four earned runs. Holmes is one of the Mets’ most reliable arms, and he will face a familiar opponent tonight.

Holmes has pitched 20 1/3 innings in his career against the Boston Red Sox, compiling a 3.54 ERA. Holmes has a better chance at collecting the victory here as it’s his first actual start versus Boston after exclusively facing them as a reliever.

Also, the veteran has held this current Red Sox lineup to a .152 average across 33 at-bats. Three of Holmes’ five wins in 2025 have been on the road as well, and he'll put his best foot forward tonight.

Clay Holmes to record the win

Alex Bregman Over 0.5 hits

Jarren Duran Over 0.5 RBI

I’ve included Alex Bregman many times in my picks because he’s living up to the hype, batting .303 with 11 home runs and 35 RBI in 48 contests. He’s been Boston’s most consistent hitter.

Bregman has cashed the Over in hits in four of his last six games. The 31-year-old was 1-for-3 in Monday’s victory with a double. He’s also enjoyed himself against Holmes in limited at-bats, going 2-for-5.

Jarren Duran has also impressed for Boston, batting .268 with three homers and 28 RBI in 48 contests. That’s my focus here. Duran raked on Monday, going 2-for-4 with a double, triple, and an RBI. He’s driven in five runs in his last three appearances, finishing with four RBI against the Atlanta Braves a couple of days ago.

Duran has dominated the Mets in his career, hitting .407 with four RBI in only seven games. While he’s 0-for-4 against Holmes, I’ll ride Duran’s hot bat.
