One of the brightest young stars in MLB takes the mound for the Miami Marlins as they visit the Atlanta Braves tonight.
Eury Perez has been a dominant force lately, and my Marlins vs. Braves predictions are backing the road squad because of him.
Read about why with my MLB picks for Thursday, August 7.
Marlins vs Braves prediction
Marlins vs Braves best bet: Marlins moneyline (-115 at BetMGM)
Eury Perez emerged as one of baseball’s brightest young stars in a 19-start rookie season in 2023, managing a 3.15 ERA and 28.9% K rate as a 20-year-old. The Dominican hurler’s second act was delayed after he underwent Tommy John surgery, but it has been well worth the wait.
After a few bumpy outings reacclimating to the big leagues (11 ER across 16 IP in his first four starts), the Miami Marlins right-hander found his groove by allowing just four total earned runs in his six most recent outings (34 IP).
The underlying metrics support his strong resurgence as he ranks in the 94th percentile in xERA (2.76) and the 97th in xBA (.194). Out of 148 starting pitchers who have thrown 50+ innings, Perez ranks third in Stuff+ (116).
His pitching counterpart, Atlanta Braves veteran Carlos Carrasco, would rank tied for last (148th) with an 83 Stuff+ if he had enough innings to qualify. He doesn’t make batters miss (17.8% K rate) and gets hit hard (12th percentile barrel rate), so his 5.68 ERA hasn’t been unlucky.
Miami has hit right-handed pitching well lately (115 wRC+ since the Break), giving it a leg up over Atlanta (100).
Marlins vs Braves same-game parlay (SGP)
Perez has thrown at least six strikeouts in four of his last six games and should find success against an Atlanta lineup with a 24.2% K rate (sixth highest) against right-handed pitching since the break.
Carrasco has allowed four earned runs in three of his last five starts and has a woeful bullpen behind him (6.72 ERA since the break), so Miami should plate runs in this contest. Xavier Edwards will likely be atop the lineup, and he hits .317 against right-handed pitching
