HR picks for August 16
Aaron Judge (+230 at DraftKings)
Aaron Judge returned from the IL recently, but it’s taken him a bit of time to find his best offensively again. He’s only hitting .172 in August. That being said, Judge finally went deep on Tuesday – his 38th home run of the year.
He’ll face Sonny Gray today, a former teammate who is now pitching for the St. Louis Cardinals. Judge is 3-for-9 lifetime against him with a double. Gray has allowed 17 bombs this season, with 12 coming off the bats of right-handed hitters.
Also, the slugger has 20 round-trippers on the road. It’s only a matter of time until Judge starts raking again, and his past success versus Gray gives optimism for this play.
Shohei Ohtani (+190 at DraftKings)
Shohei Ohtani continues to do it all for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He’s tied with Schwarber for the NL lead in home runs with 43, and he’ll be excited for tonight’s matchup. The Dodgers continue a huge series with the San Diego Padres, and it’s Dylan Cease on the bump for the visitors.
The Japanese superstar has made Cease’s life a nightmare in the past. He’s 9-for-25 lifetime with two doubles, three long balls, and 10 RBIs. Ohtani also happens to have four home runs in his last six contests, going deep in four consecutive games recently.
Cease is having a rough campaign with a 4.52 ERA and has given up 17 bombs in 24 starts. Eight of those have come on the road, where his ERA sits at 5.52. 25 of Ohtani’s homers are at home and 33 are against righties.
Kyle Schwarber (+200 at DraftKings)
Kyle Schwarber is also swinging it with authority this month. He has six home runs in August, and just went deep for the 43rd time on Friday against the Washington Nationals. He’s destroyed the Nats this season, already smacking five round-trippers against them in just 30 at-bats.
Washington sends Cade Cavalli to the mound today, who Schwarber has never faced. He’s allowed one homer in two starts this season. Schwarber has 26 bombs off right-handed hurlers, though, and has left the yard 22 times on the road.
The Nationals’ bullpen also has a 5.84 ERA and has surrendered 62 home runs. Only four ball clubs have allowed more. One way or another, Schwarber has a real shot at smacking No. 44.
