HR picks for August 8
Kyle Schwarber (+210 at DraftKings)
Kyle Schwarber has taken the National League lead in home runs with 40, surpassing Shohei Ohtani. While he’s failed to go deep in back-to-back games, he had three homers in two contests before that, even smacking two long balls in one contest on Monday against the Baltimore Orioles. Schwarber is always a threat to leave the yard.
The Philadelphia Phillies face the Texas Rangers tonight, and they hand trade deadline acquisition Merrill Kelly the ball. Schwarber is familiar with him after Kelly spent most of his career with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The slugger is 4-for-15 lifetime, and two of those hits have left the ballpark.
Kelly has struggled with the long ball against left-handed batters, with 10 homers surrendered.
Bo Bichette (+400 at DraftKings)
Bo Bichette is starting to heat up, and he’s once again showing why he’s one of the best batters around.
Bichette leads the big leagues in hits with 145 and just went 7-for-17 in a three-game sweep of the Colorado Rockies, smacking three home runs in the process. Bichette went deep twice in the series opener and once in the rubber match.
He’s now up to 16 homers on the year. The infielder couldn’t be hotter heading into tonight’s opener against the Los Angeles Dodgers, where the Jays will face Clayton Kershaw. That’s good news for Bichette, who is 2-for-3 lifetime against him with two round-trippers.
Bichette has six home runs off left-handed pitchers, and Kershaw has allowed five of his six homers to right-handed batters. Another bomb for Bichette could be on the way.
Michael Conforto (+475 at DraftKings)
This may not be the most confident play, but the No. 1 reason I’m eyeing Michael Conforto to go deep tonight is because of his past success against Max Scherzer, a former National League East foe. While Conforto is batting only .191 this season with the Dodgers to go along with nine home runs, he’s had a lot of success versus the former Cy Young winner.
Conforto is 12-for-39 all-time with four home runs against Scherzer. All nine of his bombs this year are off right-handed hurlers. Scherzer has had issues with the long ball, allowing nine in only eight starts.
Left-handed hitters have taken Scherzer deep six times in 2025 as well. Conforto needs a boost, and facing a pitcher who he has a solid track record against in the past may help the veteran break out of a slump.
