Shohei Ohtani is having another magical season, but his bat has gone cold over the last handful of games.
My Diamondbacks vs. Dodgers predictions see Ohtani breaking out in a big way against a struggling starter and a bullpen he has a strong history against.
Let’s take a closer look at my MLB picks for August 31.
Diamondbacks vs Dodgers prediction
Diamondbacks vs Dodgers best bet: Shohei Ohtani Over 2.5 total bases (+110)
Shohei Ohtani has averaged 1.3 bases over his last 10 games while falling short of this number in five straight. The good news is Ohtani draws a favorable matchup against Brandon Pfaadt and the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Shohei hasn’t seen a ton of Pfaadt but has performed well in a limited sample, with two of three hits going for extra bases.
That checks out, given what Pfaadt throws. Ohtani has an ISO of .224 or higher — and has hit at least four homers — against each of the four pitches he uses more than 10% of the time.
Ohtani has also shown a lot more power against right-handed pitching. He’s excellent against both, but his ISO is nearly 100 points higher (.361 vs. 268) when facing a righty.
When Pfaadt eventually bows out of this game, Ohtani is still primed for success. He’s 8-for-23 against Arizona relievers with three homers and five extra-base hits.
The L.A. slugger is far too good to remain this quiet, especially in such a good spot. Expect him to make a lot of noise at the plate today.
Diamondbacks vs Dodgers same-game parlay (SGP)
Will Smith has hit singles in just under half of his games despite a dry spell in which he’s done so only four of the last 20. Smith owns a .302 average against righties and is 4-for-12 against Pfaadt, so this seems a good spot to get back on track.
I’m expecting traffic on the basepaths early and often for the Los Angeles Dodgers, who are tied for second in runs per game and drawing a starter with a 5.24 ERA.
That should lead to plenty of RBI chances for Freeman, who has driven in nine runs over Los Angeles’ last six wins.
