MLB Sharp Money and Line Movement Report

By Patrick Everson

Chicago went up as a slim -112 favorite at DraftKings on Saturday night, slipped to ostensibly a pick 'em, then rebounded a few cents to -113 and is back at the opener at 2:15 p.m. ET. The Cubs are taking 55 percent of moneyline tickets and 63 percent of moneyline cash. The total has bounced around a good bit, from 8 to 8.5 to 7.5, and it's now 8 (Under -115), with 52 percent of tickets on the Under and 89 percent of cash on the Over.

Starting pitchers

Kyle Hendricks (6-4, 4.62 ERA): After an absolutely miserable start to the season, Hendricks is beginning to look like “The Professor” again. In May, Hendricks had a 2.67 ERA over five starts and he pitched six innings of three-run ball in a win over the Padres on June 1. The righty now heads to Oracle Park, where he has a career 2.22 ERA over four starts.

Johnny Cueto (4-1, 3.45 ERA): Cueto is no longer the ace he used to be but he occasionally dials it back and turns in a stellar outing. Also, the righty’s 3.45 ERA this year would be his second-lowest mark in the last five years, so there’s no denying that he’s throwing it well right now. Cueto also happens to be better at this ballpark, as he has a 2.59 ERA at home and that number goes up to 4.50 on the road.

Betting trend to know

Moneyline pick

The Giants have won seven of their last eight games heading into this one, so it’s not going to be easy for the Cubs to take them down. However, Chicago does suspiciously come into this game as the favorite, despite the fact that San Francisco has been the better team this season and Cueto the better pitcher than Hendricks.

Having said that, baseball fans know that Hendricks is actually the better option in this game, and that makes it easier to back the sharper side this afternoon.

Hendricks hasn’t faced the Giants since 2019 but he pitched seven innings of shutout ball against them in that game. And Hendricks allowed just one earned run in 15 1-3 innings of work over two starts against San Francisco in 2018.

A lot of things have changed since then, but sometimes a starter will have some extra confidence just knowing that he has dominated the players in a certain uniform. On top of that, Hendricks has been in a groove as of late.

Chicago also has a few guys that have given Cueto trouble in their careers. Jason Heyward is 7 for 22 with two doubles, two dingers and four RBI against Cueto and Kris Bryant is 5 for 10 with a homer and two RBI.

If that’s not enough, both Joc Pederson and Anthony Rizzo have taken him deep, with Rizzo actually doing it twice. The two of them don’t have great averages against Cueto, but they have the pop to make him pay for any mistakes.

PREDICTION: Cubs (-115)

Over/Under pick

Five of Hendricks’ last seven starts have had eight or fewer runs scored and he should be able to do his part in keeping this total somewhat low.

This Giants team really doesn’t have any guys that have had Hendricks’ number, which is why he should be able to cruise through this start. And while Cueto could run into trouble with a few batters in this game, the righty isn’t likely to get completely shelled.

Overall, it just doesn’t seem all that crazy to think that this game will end with a final score of something 4-3. With a total like this, Under bettors will have a little room to breathe.

PREDICTION: Under 8.5 (-110)
