The Chicago Cubs will look to make up ground in the NL Central race as they host the Milwaukee Brewers for the second game of a doubleheader on Tuesday night.

Chicago earned a much-needed win in Game 1 today, but I’m picking Milwaukee to even up the score in my Brewers vs. Cubs predictions below.

Let’s take a closer look at tonight’s matchup in my free MLB picks for Tuesday, August 19.

Brewers vs Cubs prediction

Brewers vs Cubs best bet: Brewers moneyline (-115)

Brandon Woodruff gets the start for the Milwaukee Brewers tonight, and he has been outstanding since finally making his return from a right shoulder surgery that cost him all of last year. While his velocity is down a bit, Woodruff has been incredibly effective in seven starts, going 4-0 with a 2.06 ERA and a sterling 0.737 WHIP. In fact, Woodruff hasn’t allowed more than two runs in any of his starts yet this year.

The Chicago Cubs may have a little less confidence in Jameson Taillon. The veteran is 7-6 with a 4.44 ERA on the year, but has been allowing far too many home runs to be as effective as he’d like to be. Opponents have hit 22 longballs in 95.1 innings against Taillon.

He’s also been out since June 29 with a right calf injury, so it’s uncertain how long he’ll be able to go tonight.

So it will be up to a returning Taillon and a bullpen that’s already thrown nearly four innings today to shut down the Brewers, who average a league-leading 5.20 runs per game.

Brewers vs Cubs same-game parlay (SGP)

There’s an excellent pitching matchup on tap for the nightcap, but these teams are each in the top five in the majors in runs per game, so I have to take the Over on a dismal total of 6.5 runs.

Brandon Woodruff has gone for 6+ strikeouts in five of his seven starts this season, so I’ll take that Over as well. Let’s also throw in a bet on William Contreras to get at least one hit, something he has done in nine of his last 10 games.

His betting strategy focuses more on finding line value based on deviations from the market rather than traditional handicapping, primarily shopping between DraftKings, FanDuel, and Fanatics in his home state of Connecticut, though he’s not afraid to do deep game analysis to find profitable bets at any book.

Outside of gambling, Ed is an avid curler who competes in mixed doubles on the World Curling Tour and runs a popular curling YouTube channel, Chess on Ice. That experience has come in handy during the Olympics, when he has proven to be a successful curling bettor as well.

Ed's advice to new bettors is to always open multiple sportsbook accounts and check the odds at each before placing any bet. Successful sports betting is about consistently beating the closing line value, which requires finding spots where one book is offering odds far better than the rest of the market and jumping on those opportunities.
