Carlos Correa was the extra-innings hero for the Houston Astros in Friday’s series opener against the New York Yankees as he hit the go-ahead single in the top of the 10th.

The shortstop has been a sparkplug for the Astros since being acquired from the Minnesota Twins just over a week ago and I’ll break down why I think his hot streak will continue in my Astros vs. Yankees predictions and MLB picks for Saturday, August 9.

Did the Houston Astros make the best move at this year’s MLB trade deadline by acquiring Carlos Correa from the Minnesota Twins? It’s looking that way just over a week later.

Correa logged another two hits during Friday’s series opener against the New York Yankees, including a single in the 10th inning to drive home the eventual game-winning run.

The shortstop has now recorded 2+ total bases in five of his last six contests, as well as multiple hits in four of those games, and I don’t see the Yankees putting out his hot streak just yet.

New York is set to send Luis Gil to the mound for just his second start of the season this afternoon.

The right-hander missed the first half of the season due to a lat strain sustained in spring training and finally made his debut last Sunday when he gave up five hits and five earned runs to the Miami Marlins over just 3 1/3 innings.

Gil obviously has a ton of rust to shake off and he’ll be backed up by the fifth-worst bullpen in the AL by ERA (4.26). Correa should have the upper hand in this matchup.

Astros vs Yankees same-game parlay (SGP)

Carlos Correa 2+ total bases

Yankees Under 4.5 runs

Astros -1.5

The Yankees are 1-6 in their last seven outings and that’s largely due to the fact that they simply can’t hit the baseball right now.

Over the last seven days, New York ranks 29th in the majors in runs scored (14), 30th in batting average (.161), and 29th in OPS (.286). Unsurprisingly, the Pinstripes have scored Under 4.5 runs in five of their last six.

Framber Valdez takes the mound for Houston today and boasts a solid 2.83 ERA. Look for him to lead the Astros to a comfortable win over the slumping Yankees this afternoon.
