Renegade was listed as the Kentucky Derby favorite as expected, but he may not go off as the public choice after drawing the dreaded rail post. Join Robert Criscola as he assesses the Kentucky Derby post draw winners and losers.

The 2026 Kentucky Derby odds have been set following today's Kentucky Derby post positions draw. It's Renegade who's been established as the 4-1 favorite on the morning-line despite drawing the rail, which hasn't won since 1986.

He's followed by No. 6 Commandment (6-1), No. 18 Further Ado (6-1), and No. 12 Chief Wallabee (8-1).

Below you'll find the full field and odds for all 24 Kentucky Derby horses, along with my thoughts on the Kentucky Derby post draw winners and losers.

2026 Kentucky Derby post draw winners

Commandment

Historically speaking, post No. 6 has been a bad draw, with only two winners (Sea Hero in 1993, Canonero II in 1971) since the starting gate was introduced in 1930. While there's good reason the rail is a bad post to get in the Derby, this trend is simply random.

Commandment's draw was just fine, as he should be able to get the stalking or mid-pack trip Luis Saez wants without fear of being wiped out at the start.

Wonder Dean

There was audible excitement from the Wonder Dean camp at the Derby post draw after their horse drew stall No. 10. Perhaps they pay attention to the historical numbers.

This post boasts nine Derby winners and 24 horses in the money in 86 total starts (27.9%). It's a toss-up between this and post No. 5 (10 race winners and 22 ITM finishes in 93 starts) for which is the most productive all-time.

2026 Kentucky Derby post draw losers

Renegade

You have to go back to Ferdinand, one of the best horses of the entire 1980s, to find the last Derby winner from the rail. He took the "Run for the Roses" in 1986 en route to a Breeders' Cup Classic triumph in 1987 and earnings of over $3.7 million before all was set and done.

Renegade's resume isn't all that awe-inspiring for a favorite to begin with. He needed four starts to break his maiden, which he did in the Sam F. Davis, prior to a fast score in the Arkansas Derby.

He is bereft of early speed and could easily be shuffled back to last in the opening furlong. This was a "worst-case scenario" for the Todd Pletcher-trained colt.

Further Ado

John Velazquez has never ridden Further Ado before, and he'll be trying to figure out a trip for this horse from post No. 18 — not ideal.

Further Ado has been no further than three lengths off the lead in each of his three stakes starts to date. Velazquez may have to ask him for more speed than usual in order to make that position while trying to cross over from this wide draw.
