I wanted to start a thread on this match where only Tennis is discussed and not name calling. Both sides opinions appreciated and received welcomely. Let's give people information to help them back their picks, so that let them bet who they like.

It's no secret I am big on Nadal and I have bet BIG on the -160. I can't resist it. Just too much value for me. I live in the UK and I see the hysteria and hype that surrounds Murray every year when Wimbledon comes round. It was the same with Tim Henman. The difference is Henman never had the ability Andy Murray has. He outperformed himself at Wimbledon year after year, but he was never good enough to win it.

Grass is probably Murray's second favourite surface, after hard courts. He can play on grass as winning in Queens and making solid improvment year after year in Wimbledon has shown. Still, I have always felt and felt strongly that Andy Murray will never win Wimbledon. The reason's being.

    1) It's clear Flushing meadows is his favourite to play and it's abundantly clear he hates the hype and hysteria he has to deal with every year at Wimbledon. He always looks uncomfortable and by the look of his body language he feels the weight of the world is on his shoulders when he plays at Wimbledon. Rafa on the other hand you know will absolutely relish the atmosphere and indeed thrive on it. Home court advantage in my opinion is a hinderance here to Murray.

    2) I don't think his games suits grass. When Murray gets put under pressure, he tends to do his best to get the ball back in play and hopes for his opponent to make a mistake instead of being aggressive and going for his shots, which is what you need to do to win on grass. Tsonga had chances to bury Murray in the second set but missed crucial shots when Murray was beginning to show real weakness. Rafa won't be so generous you can be sure of that. Also, when Murray is under big pressure his first serve goes to pieces. I think he is serving 50% on the year so far (maybe Tennis Capper can correct me). These service problems are not going away and Rafa will murder that second serve. Rafa is serving in or around 70% and while he doesn't have the biggest server in the world, it is effective and gets the job done.

    3) These games down to the big points and self belief. When they both played each other in Wimbledon last time out Nadal CRUSHED Murray. Nadal has been clutch for years in Wimbledon and Paris. Murray has been found wanting when put under pressure when playing at Wimbledon. Yesterday Tsonga was a set up and 5-4 in the tie break. Nadal does not let Murray off the hook there. I don't think we will see a massacre here. As people have pointed out Murray is a good player. Big first serve, very intelligent and the best return of service in the game. I think we will see 3 hard well fought sets and I expect Rafa to come out 2-1 in front and roll from there ala Soderling. Yes Murray has beaten Nadal at grand slams, but one of those victories was against a player who was not anywhere near his best. I would always fancy Murray over Nadal in Flushing meadows, providing it wasn't the final and even though I wouldn't play much. Nadal has beaten Murray on the court they are playing on tomorrow and both players know it. Self Belief is a key advantage here for Nadal.

The problem when you play someone like Nadal when he is on form, is that you have to win 3 sets. You know the guys determination and will to win is legendary. Guys like Fried shrimp thinks the mental side of the game is not important. When you have 2 evenly matched players, then it's what makes all the difference. Rafa has won Wimbledon and been to 3 finals. You can't buy that kind of experience. Murray has failed his biggest tests (the matches with the most pressure) so far (2 grand slam finals and Wimbledon semi last year). Until Murray proves himself, like Soderling had to do, then it's best to fade him in these kind of matches and situations. The pressure is all on him. Expectant crowd, the fact he is now 23 and still has no grand slam. Players like Djock and DelPetro have made the break through. Murray still has not. The longer he goes without a slam the more the pressure will build when he gets to these situations..

    4) Murray's coach Miles Maclagan. What has he done to get such a high profile job as Murray's Tennis coach? Maybe I am clutching at straws here but he just doesn't convince me as Murray's tactical coach. Uncle Tony, you may the same, but he must do something right as Nadal's record in Grand slams that are not hard courts is quite frankly phenomenal.

    5) I know its different surfaces but winning is winning. Rafa has lost one match in 3 months. Murray has been off key since the Australian open. Winning is a habit, and a good habbit to have. I like the world's number one player on a great run against a player before this tournament that was clearly struggling with his confidence. Murray has not really been tested yet. Rafa will test him, of doubt there is no doubt. I don't believe you can suddenly start winning BIG matches when you haven't been doing it all year.

I don't have a million stats like Tennis Capper has (which I will post to help people make their minds up). He is backing his picks up with stats and good luck to the lad. This is where you might agree or disagree but lets use this thread to help cap this match. Afterall like or dislike isn't getting money off the books the main objective here?

    Good Luck with your Plays

From Tennis Capper: The Murray side of Things:

Mack05: "Murray was 2 points away from probably going out of the tournament and Tsonga is not much on grass."

Tennis Capper:  "Tsonga holds a career 36-9 Grass record, including a marvelous win over Leyton Hewitt in 2007 when he was arguably one of the Top players on Tour on this surface. 'Tsonga is not much on grass' is just an ignorant statement considering in the last 4 years he only lost to Murray (yesterday), Karlovic (last year at WImbledon a crazy tight 4 setters with 3 TieBreaks), Haas, Gasquet (when he was a Top 10 player) and Cilic.

Yesterday Tsonga served 64% and 74% 1st balls in the first and the second set respectively hitting a combined 35 winners, surely who could possibly be in a dogfight against a quality player who is putting those numbers up?
Rafa would have won those 6-3 6-3... right?
    Moving on.

Mack05: "Now you want to back a guy that let's be honest choked against Roddick last year at the same stage."

Tennis Capper: I don't even know where to start here. Anyone and I mean anyone who knows the game of Tennis and that remembers that match will assure you that Andy Roddick was playing the best Tennis of his life (he was forced to retire in Queen's against Blake because he rolled his ankle in the first set, otherwise he would have reached the final easy there as well) and Murray was completely outplayed by someone who was the far superior player that day. Roddick was playing so great that had he not missed that simple volley in the second set TieBreak against Federer when he was already up 1-0 he would have won that final as well, which he lost in the 5th against the old Federer who needed to play a fantastic match against Roddick to lift the trophy.
Again, if you think Andy Murray choked that match away you seriously have a contort way of looking at Tennis.

Mack05: "That got humilatated the last time he played Nadal on centre court"

Considering Andy Murray of today the same player of 2008 is just as asinine as it gets. Sure until that QF match you quoted he had only reached the Third round of a slam as his best result, but that doesn't matter right? Who could possibly lose that match to Rafa in straight sets... Since then he has reached two Slam finals (both lost to Roger Federer) and a Slam SF (outplayed by Roddick last year).
This is plain and simple not the same Andy Murray.
Give the proper weight to past matches, it will help you in the future.

    Now about the match.
Take a close look at these ratios:

    Nishikori - 33 winners 35 unforced errors
Haase - 40 winners 23 unforced errors (was up 2-1 before running out of gas)
Petzschner - 63 winners 40 unforced errors (was up 2-1 before running out of gas)
Mathieu - 24 winners 21 unforced errors (this doesn't say as much as the 36 to 9 ratio Rafa recorded. He just played amazing in this round)
    Soderling - 42 winners 35 unforced errors

Now take a look at Murray's numbers here:

vs Hajek: 56 winners 21 unforced errors
vs Nieminen: 49 winners 18 unforced errors
vs Simon: 36 winners 18 unforced errors
vs Querrey: 39 winners 16 unforced errors
vs Tsonga: 46 winners 16 unforced errors

One could argue that Nadal is a much tough opposition (obviously it is) however Murray recorded:

38 winners 25 unforced errors serving 58% 1st balls including 13 aces in Australia vs him

65 winners and 54 unforced errors at the US Open in their precedent Best of 5 match serving 64% 1st balls including 21 aces

But the biggest numbers here are the following: in both that match at US Open Nadal had a negative winners/unforced errors ratio (you never thought you were going to 32 to 40 and 23 to 26) so exactly what does that tell you? I am in a good mood today and I want to tell you: when Nadal has to face a quality player with solid defensive skills he could struggle because his opponent won't beat himself. This is why players like Monfils, Simon, Roddick and Murray have all recorded wins against Rafa.
You think Murray will throw 50 unforced errors against Rafa?
He hasn't hit more than 21 for the entire tournament recording an unbelievable amount of winners so far.

I don't know exactly why this statement works only with certain players and Murray but when the Scot faces Rafa he always seems the perfect game plan. Do you want to talk about how he was marvelously serving out wide to his backhand from the deuce court in Australia and followed the serve with a volley (28 net approaches for that match, 22 points won) giving Nadal no sort of chance on return?

Murray is fit. Fit as hell. The fittest man on tour by a mile. This is why he regularly wins matches from behind and this is why he is the only one that has a as much of an outstanding record in deciding sets (10-4 in 5th sets) like Rafa. Yesterday I was big on Nadal because if Soderling was good enough to get to a 5th set he would have never won it because he has fitness issues and because is just outstanding in these comparing to him but here Nadal holds zero advantage if this match goes 5, actually let me tell you that Murray could be the favorite if the match goes 5 considering that his serve gets better regularly as the match goes on and considering that he was involved in a 4 setter once these 10 days while Rafa went 5 twice and 4 once already here at Wimbeldon.

Will Murray serve 40% like vs Querrey, 65% like vs Simon, half way between these numbers or what? You don't know, I don't know, nobody knows, however considering the serve was poor against Querrey exclusively I am willing to say that there are good chances he will put up a decent enough performance against Rafa.
If he doesn't he will lose most likely but if he does like I think he will I give him a good chance here, higher than what the odds I bought Murray at suggested (+142).

I hunt for value, this is what I do. This is why several bookmakers limited me to peanuts and this is why some bookmakers banned me saying that they wanted none of my business. I am now forced to play at 2 exchanges and 1 bookmaker (Pinnacle) because of this.
Now I made Murray +120 so for me this is a regular sized bet which I honestly give two shits about. I would literally trade a loss here for a relieving morning shit which puts me in a good mood for the entire day as well as for an amazing 5 setter to watch, even if Nadal takes in the end.
So, again, I won't disappear after one loss, after ten losses, hell even after 20 losses, because as long as I hunt for value I am doing my job.
Bad bets win regularly, nothing I can do about that.

I'll be on Nadal as well, not becuase I think he's got good odds; the odds are right about where they should be. I'm taking Nadal simply because Andy Murray has yet to prove that he can win a major. I think Murray has the stuff to win a major but time and time again he collapses and is unable to pull through. I will absolutely not be shocked if Murray wins but until he proves that he can hack it this late in a major, I'll be on the otherside. BOL all.

Your points #1 through #3 seem a little strange.

    Body Language?   Self Belief?  Pressure?

Dude, Murray has ALREADY BEATEN NADAL in the last 2 Slams they played in.  Australian this year and US Open last year.  He lost Wimbledon to Nadal but that was 2008.  I think he's okay on the Self Belief and Body Language part.

Must of been the Yoga or Hypnosis or something.  It cured everything.  Was magic.  Made his ground strokes a little crisper.

I'd be more worried about your boy Rafa melting down.  Every time he gets beat, he comes up with a new injury.

He's the headcase out there.  Runs around like an idiot fist pumping every time he wins a point.

And what's up with Rafa simultaneously drinking out of two different water bottles?  One swig from one and another swig from another.

Either he's OCD or taking something.

HE HAS BEATEN NADAL ON HARDCOURTS NOT GRASS.

One of thise victories was against a Nadal that was clearly nowhere 100% (everyone knows this). So his only true was at the US Open and Murray can beat anyone at Flushing Meadows. In Fact I will be playing Murray at the US Open.

If you can't understand what pressure and self belief are in sport and the overall effect they have on elite sportsmen, then you really should not gamble. The is a reason the same countries win the soccer world cup, the reason the Yankees and Lakers win regulary at baseball and basketball. The reason the same tennis players dominate over and over again. Sports is alot more then stats. Winners are born not made. You either have that winners mentality or you don't. Until Murray proves he has under the most intense pressure then he has to be faded.

If you ever played sports Shrimp at a high level you would understand that self belief and the ability the deal with pressure is the difference between being a champion or not good enough

Fried hasn't pulled any triggers yet.  Wanting the Murray line to go up.  Only +140 right now, seems like everyone will be on Rafa and hopefully rise to at least +160.

Will agree that Rafa is playing very good these days.  No lie.  But don't think for a minute that he's not beatable.  It's going to take a power player and Murray can hit the ball.  Hell, it looked like Soderling was gonna gut him.

Please don't ruin the thread with nonsense. Post your reasons for Murray but please don't be silly. There has been 3 times in Murray's career where he has faced his biggest challenges and lost. People backing him not to be aware of this. Sportsmen and women make breakthrough's all the time and reach the next level. I don't believe Murray will ever make that breaktrough at Wimbledon and no amount of facts or statistics will change my mind

More than likely I will be tailing Johnny Mac.

Has nothing to do with your Teddy Bear pressure BS though.

Yes, I understand "pressure"...... it can be huge or it can be a non issue.  It's usually a factor first few years and then competitors get comfortable with it and manage it, and even use it to their advantage.

Point here is that DOES NOT APPLY TO MURRAY.  He's over that hump.

Does have the home crowd expectations which is not going to help but he's also got the home crowd support so that is kind of a wash.

You are bringing up all these delusional factors.

Only thing I added was the Astrological part.  Everything else you brought up.

I will be playing small on Djoko tomorrow. Very tough match to cap, but I think he finds away to get this done. I tend to fade players never gone this far, coming off their best ever victories to date (ala Prinko today). Berdych has the game to not only win tomorrow, but to win the tournament. I prefer to go with the man that's been in the bigger matches more often. I also think Berdych's victory looks better then it really is. Fed has not looked himself and he struggled all tournament. Let's go Nico!!!!!

    And the Lakers??????

Didn't have anything to do with the Boston starting center not playing in the final game?

Yes, you asked for this one.

It's like talking to my 6 year old nephew. Please just leave the thread. Boston itself has a winning mentality. That comes from generations of success..It's called a winning mentality. Can you explain to me why the same teams win over and over again at the soccer world cup?. Why Boston and LA has more championships then the rest of the NBA combined? Why Federer won 6 times at Wimbledon and Sampras 7? If you don't understand the point I am making its best you leave the thread as your ruining it with your nonsense..

Until Murray proves he has a winning mentality on the biggest of stages then I cannot bet on him at these odds in this spot against a great champion at the top of his game

    Very nice, Mack and TC

For me, this is a tough match...I never like to go against Nadal in 5 setters but this seems like a great spot to back Murray

I find it odd that one can argue that mental issues play no part in the sport of tennis...really?...this is a one-on-one, will versus will, sport...even the best of players with all the athleticism and skill in the world will crack under the pressure at times...the ones that keep it together and play at a high level with consistency are the ones that win

and if your mind isn't in the right place, you will not win...plain and simple...heck, you could bet on this sport solely based on mental factors and do very well

I thought he was injured, reason why you didn't bet him vs Soderling. This changed overnight?

Also, why did you cut the part about Djokovic being the only one who could stop Rafa here from my writeup? Anyway here it is:

mack "Only Novak can stop Rafa now.."

Now this, this is simply hilarious.
In best of 5 matches Rafa and Novak met 4 times: 11 sets to 1 for Rafa. Novak stopped playing in Wimbledon and retired vs him when he was down 2-1 if I recall correctly (as usual).
Sure, Andy Murray crushed Nadal in the Australian Open earlier this year, sure Murray won against Nadal as a +330 underdog at the US Open and sure in Best of 5 matches Nadal and Murray are tied at 2-2 for their h2h, but hey, clearly Novak is the only one who can stop Rafa in a Slam.
After all Tsonga has a 36-9 record on grass and he is not much, so I suppose that Novak's 35-11 record on the same surface is definitely more than enough for stopping Rafa.

I cut it out because Novak and Rafa are not playing tomorrow.   I of course was right to be concerned about Rafa's injury against Soderling and should be tomorrow too. Afterall he pulled out against Murray in Australia after claiming before the tournament the injury was fine. If Murray goes up 2-0 like Australia, I will seriously be worried as I am pretty sure the injury will come into effect. Rafa seems to get 'injured' when things go against him.

After watching Rafa against Soderling it's difficult not to believe he is close to 100% for tomorrow. He has has 2 pretty standard games after being pushed hard in the early rounds. The injury is a big concern here. I have factored it in but my mind is made up. I am huge on Nadal against Murray and Huge on the future's bet as well.

Regardless of the inury, tell me how this is Nadal's top of his game.
He was taken 5 from Petzschner and Haase for God's sake.
I supposed that when he was steamrolling opponents in 2006 and 2007, he wasn't playing as well as he is playing now

Anyway, even here you just can't avoid provocation. It is just inside your ego. What is the necessity of saying to me "He is backing his picks up with stats and good luck to the lad." Couldn't you just write your stuff and my stuff without once more having a small go at my style.
You just can't make a point without being a douche.

    Pressure Question:

If Murray sucks under pressure, how come he beats Nadal in recent Slams?

It shouldn't have been cut out because it has to do with all the other misleading statements in your first post. Not the one stated in this thread but the one in the other thread.

"Tsonga is not much on grass."   False

"Now you want to back a guy that let's be honest choked against Roddick last year at the same stage."     False

"That got humilatated the last time he played Nadal on centre court"     Misleading

"Only Novak can stop Rafa now.."    Funny
