I have tried pen-base input a few times, I've owned a PDA and more recently a tablet PC. If you really want to be proficient on pen-based writing you have to learn to write in a way that is recognizable by the computer and can be easily converted into text. I found this very inconveniend and despite all my efforts could never input text with a stylus nearly as fast as I could if I typed.
The only time I could see the pen-based input being advantageous is if you needed the ability to input information into you computer with a single hand.
I think that you're better off just learning how to type. You can probably download some teaching software to improve your word per minute on the keyboard.

Practice makes perfect! If you're slow you may not be using the proper technique, i took typing in high school which really helped....asdf jkl; haha those are the keys your 4 fingers should be on for each hand, maybe you already knew this...but i've seen so many people using their 2 index fingers to type at a deathly slow rate. From those 8 keys your seperate fingers can easily navigate around to the ones close by, muscle memory will eventually have it so you don't even have to look at the keyboard when typing. There probably a site that'll show you proper techniques. GL!
