I have a old PC with 20g HD and runs Win95. The cpu is probably a pentium II or something from that era. I think it has 128m ram. I'd have to plug it in and find all this out.
Is it possible to upgrade the OS to XP thru some sort of free download or to install the latest Linux?
I want to give the PC to a tenant who doesn't have a PC and rather than buy an ok refurb for about $400, I'd like to see if the old one can be upgraded.

Requirements are met from what you have said. In fact the minimum recommended are met, when considering XP. Not sure on the Linux latest OS. I haven't dealt with Linux in a long time. I am sure you can get a pirated copy from some bittorrent or P2P, but you can get it legally an upgrade for about 100 bucks. Good luck....

You could upgrade to XP. But I would bump that memory up. Make sure it has 256 at the very least. And I mean very.
I saw this after I posted. I totally agree. I remember one of my older PCs, I upgraded it and it had 128 MB of RAM. It ran a little sluggish, for what I like. So I up it to the max of 512MB Ram is pretty cheap these days.....

Thx guys! I think we'll boost the ram to 256 or 512. The XP is something we'll have to look into. I think I'd just as soon get a legit copy for the OS since it is a wee bit more crucial than some warez apps.

Where Vista is out now I imagine the stores will be dumping the remaining XP's. Although the big box chains were required to take it off the shelfs. Take a look at your Sunday sale sections and see what's out there.
I'm sure you could get an XP Home upgrade on Ebay for $50 or so now.

i have alot of experience with computers, whatever you do, do not put xp on your computer, no matter how much ram you add(i doubt that your motherboard will accept more than 512mb anyways). XP will bring your system to a crawl. not only is your processor, hard drive and amount of ram archaic, but you probably have an onboard graphics chip using 2mb of the system memory.
just leave the windows 95 on there or maybe put windows 98 or NT.
as far as getting a new computer, vista comes out on the 30th and all new comps will come loaded with it. also, there should be lots of great deals on hardware as companies are hoping for a black friday type launch

Hang it up. Wireless on a 95 machine won't happen. And make sure she's not going to do any banking on it. With 95 she might as well spray paint her banking info on the sidewalk.

You can pick up a refurbed Pentium 4 in the 2.0 ghz area 256 RAM for about $300. (probably even less in the US). There are a ton of businesses that lease computers and when the leasing company gets them back they usually sell them for cheap. My parents had an old computer that was fried and I got them something like this. They only use it for internet and email so thats more than they need.

i have the vista beta version, and its actually very stable. the CNET review of it said its essentially windows xp service pack 3(basically XP with a few added bonuses, nothing revolutionary), and more stable than XP.
cnet said that there is no dire need to upgrade to it, unless u like the graphical improvements and want to have the latest technology. in terms of bugs and stability, there were no issues, so dont let that scare u off. im just not sure if its worth the price of upgrading

Anyone planiing on running the new Vista soon as it comes out? Or is it better to wait for some of the bugs to be worked out?
I've been telling all of my business customers to wait for a year. There really isn't a huge need to upgrade. It's a great deal of eye candy and most of everything is web based somehow now. I've been using it for the past year.
There are 5 different versions of it. The lowest version won't be available in most countries.
