Avast home edition for virus protection, its free, very unobtrusive, offers real time protection, updates virus definitions in background and gives you a warm fuzzy by announcing in a soothing CNN type voice when an update is complete.
SAS for malware protection, again has a free edition, $29.95 for the pro edition that offers real time protection (actively blocks the bad stuff before it can install on your system).
With those two products and Microsoft's own software that comes bundled with the Vista OS like Windows Firewall, Windows Defender and Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool you should have all you need to keep your system secure and safe.
Another nice thing about the solutions listed above besides being free, they have a small system footprint (don't hog your resources) and keep the annoy security pop-ups to a minimum, two things the big boys in the security game are often guilty of.
If you want to almost completely get rid of the annoying Vista security pop-ups (that don't really protect you like you might think) then check out Tweak UAC. It's free.

I really like Avast where they changed thier scanning engine this year.
Just to note, run away, far away from Norton and Mcafee. I've never seen a program completely take over a computer like Norton. Not a fan of Mcafee either. Huge footprints. No.....not even footprints. More like having Godzilla on your computer
