My keyboard doesn't work after I reboot...

( for anyone with knowledge about this stuff)

after a reboot, the numbers lock on my keyboard is lit, and even though the curser is blinking, I can't log-in because the keyboard is unresponsive..

I tried a system restore and I tried several new keyboards including a wireless one, but nothing works....

anyone have any ideas?

I forgot to mention that if I reboot over and over again, eventually the numbers lock light does out, allowing me to log-in...that could be a few times or HUNDREDS of times at this point....

Change USB ports.  See this a good bit with people in your situation.

Changing ports didn't work either!!

Try safe mode.  Hit the F8 button before the windows logo comes up.  Then use the up/down arrows to scroll to safe mode then hit the enter key.  Trying to see if your keyboard works before Windows loads.  Hell you can hit the F2 key or esc key to try to get in the bios also to test it out.

Lipps....It works in the safe mode, but still doesn't work when I reboot normally.   I'm not familiar with bios...what is the bios mode?

Ok, works in safe mode.  Then you got some software corruption.  Does the mouse work in regular mode ?

Bios is where you can set some geek stuff.  Very much DOS.

What OS are you running ?

Yes, the mouse works in regular...the mouse it wireless if that matters.  Should I experiment using the USB mouse to see if it works in regular mode?   I bought a wireless keyboard ( i returned it today) to see if would work..but nope.

I'm running XP....

BTW...I attempted to do a OS reinstall (repair) thinking maybe that would fix the problem, but the Disc didn't give me the option to repair...did I overlook something?

Yes, give the USB mouse a shot.  Do you usually use a PS/2 mouse?  (Round connector) ?

It depends on your disk if it will let you repair.  What you need to do is install the recovery console.

1. While running Windows XP, insert your Windows XP CD in the drive, and click Exit when the installation options are displayed
   (You can skip this if you already have the \i386 directory on your hard drive)
2. Select Start > Run and in the Open box type: {X}:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons
   Where {X} should be the driver letter of your CD drive. If the i386 directory is already installed on your computer, you can just type the path to it, for example C:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons
3. Follow the instructions to install the Recovery Console, when the installation is complete, restart your computer
4. The Recovery Console will show up in the list of available operating systems in the boot menu. to use the Recovery Console, you need administrator privileges

When you actually get into the recovery console, run this.....

chkdsk /p

I have a USB mouse, not the old PS2 that I can experiment with....

so you think a OS repair will fix the problem?

Hey, Lipps..I fogot to tell you that I AM logged into the computer  that i'm having problems with...although right now i'm using another computer. 

Is there anything I can download to fix the problem nstead of using the XP CD, recovery console etc...also, as the instructions state, I DO get an error message because I have SVS Pk 2 not 3...for some reason 3 won't install in that unit....anyway, thanks for the help...

Installed MS.net. Frame 3.5 and downloaded MS SP3...when I tried installing SP3 it got about halfway thru the install, and then the screen went blank for a few seconds and a message appeared that said something like: "Registry access denied" and then started unwinding the install.  That happens everytime I try to install SP3.  I don't understand why the registry is denying access, because it was updated and accessed prior to the install by the same program....

You need to run malwarebytes.  Download from download.com

Lipps.......Update......I ran Malwares, installed SP3, ran overy virus software program I could get ahold of , installed bios updates and updates for this and for that, and for this and for that. and NOTHING WORKED.

 In fact it got worse because originally I was able to log-in in safe-mode, (non-administrator) but all of a sudden the light comes on in safe-mode too! Now i'm really getting worried...

So the only way to get access to the computer is thru administrator because you don't need a password..anyway, I went to the Control Panel and into keyboards, and tried for the 20th time to get an update for my driver..well, finally it gave me an update!

That was 3 days ago, and i've been able to log-on without the light coming on 5-6 times which is not NORMAL....hopefully this problem is solved.....

So the lesson learned is UPDATE or INSTALL A NEW DRIVER if and when something like this happens!!!
