Lippsman or other techies

What is the best FREE virus detection/protection out there.
 
I think Lippsman has recommended AVG in the past ( and I have used it, before )
 
And my friends father ( one of those people who is "never wrong" insisted something called AVAST id number one.
 
 
what would you guys say?

AVG is the best freebie out there.  8.0 is thier latest, it has spyware protection built in also
