I'm just looking for something to burn cd/dvd's, listen to music, download photos and watch movies on plus your usual surfing and what not. Any ideas? I was thinking maybe Dell. Any help would be great.

Go to a store and physically handle the laptop. Make sure you are comfortable with the screen size and keyboard and mouse/trackball options. Nothing worse than spending and finding out you hate the touchpad or heyboard. You can get a decent laptop with Vista and a 15" screen for $500-600. Any of the major brands should do the trick, go see it before you buy it. I think Dell is a bit pricey, and unless you want to spend the money and go with the XPS series you'd be better off with an HP, Compaq etc.

Any of the laptops out can do what you need them to do. You aren't a high-end user. Dell is just fine.
No matter who you buy from, you MUST buy a good service plan- two years at the least. A computer is only as good as its service plan, and you WILL run into problems with these things. Dead pixels, messed up sound, dead hard drives- it's the nature of the beast.
Not saying that every laptop you purchase is going to be DOA, but laptops are a lot tougher to service yourself than desktops. Buy a good service plan.

dont get a dell xps unless u are looking to go top of the line, becuase thats what their xps series is. you seem like a casual user, and im sure u can get a good configuration for your needs from dell or HP for less than a grand
