Laptop Problem

Hey guys so I have a problem, my laptop stopped booting up.  It loads upto the XP screen where you choose a user then thats it, it freezes.  I think my HD is fried but i'm not sure how to check this for sure.  Also what drive would be the best to get for the laptop its an Alienware area 51, something along those lines.
