A couple of times the past two weeks my PC has booted up and then suddenly shut down and rebooted itself. One time I saw a message about fat32 (?) and the PC ran a disk check but found nothing.
Any such diagnostic to see what's going on with either the hardware or software?

If you have your XP install disk you can boot it from it and hit option R at the first blue screen. Then once you go through the prompts of having to type in a password if you have them and pick the windows installation you want to repair you can type.
chkdsk\p
This will check your files and repair any that are in need of it. From what you have posted I believe you have some corrupt files in your system32 directory.
