I used to have to turned off so I can choose what I want updated but now I see that it is set to automatic and the entire panel is greyed so I can't change the setting. My PC is XP.
WTF?
I wonder if I could go to regedit and change the setting there.

Any changes to your PC? New software, major updates, etc? The reason I ask is it is usually because your not an administrator, but if your logging in with the same user account from the time you purchased the machine you are logged in as the default admin account, especially if it has pass through authentication without user option and you haven't created another account. The other usually suspect is group policy. But I take it that this is a home PC outside a domain structure, so a domain group policy is out. So back to the first 2 questions.....

Yup, we (she) installed MSN Messenger and after that the automatic updates started. I went to start/log off/switch user and there is just one user - the owner. I'm pretty sure I am the default admin but there should be a way for me to check that.
I was about to suffocate her with a pillow but I heard you can still breathe thru it.

HHHMMMM. Never heard of MSN Messenger doing that, but you could try unistalling it to test the theory.
Also wanted to add, do you have automatic updates listed in services? You can check by going to Start...run...Type services.msc. Does it list automatic updates? If not you might need to re-register it. You can do that by going to Start....Run....Type regsvr32 wuaueng.dll and click on OK. Not sure if you need to reboot, but to make sure it all goes through I would reboot.
I also found a registry fix, from one of my sites in my favorites. Let me know if the previous stuff doesn't work and I will get you the link.
If you use 2 pillows it will get the job done.... JK...

I am going to go ahead and give you the registry fix, to restore automatic updates, in case none of the above work. I need to hit the hay, I have a bank conversion to do tomorrow.
First back up the registry. You can do this by going to Start...Run..Type regedit and click OK. Make sure you highlight my computer at the top. (This will be alot easier that to type down the exact things to backup, you will be backing up the entire registry) Click on File...Export. This opens a box. Call the filename backup and save it somewhere you know where to find it. After it is finished click on the following link...
A box will open click on Run. It will ask if you if you are sure you want to import. Click Yes. Another box will pop up and say it imported successfully. Click OK. Reboot. Hopefully the few things I listed will help. Let me know. If not I will ask around at work. Good Luck...

Thx guys! I went into services.msc and disabled it there. The auto update window is still greyed out but no more updates as of now. I get that icon in the right corner for a windows security update but I can live with it.
