My hard drive recently crashed. I purchased a new one and while trying to install the operation system (Windows XP Pro), have encountered a problem.
During the formatting stage, it reached 5% complete and froze up. When I tried rebooting the system, I received a message saying "error installing OS_".
That's as far as it goes...pressing any keys gets me nowhere. So here I sit on my 7 year old computer, looking for help. Any ideas on how to contimue the installation?
Thanks, guys!

First of all check your CD to see if it needs cleaned or is there any scratches on it.
Second, is this a legal copy of XP or a burnt copy. That is the usual problem with freezups. Although just formating it should freeze up.
Next, open the case up and get the ol' can of air and hit that cpu heatsink and fan hard. Unless you have cleaned it before there probably is a layer of dust on top of the heatsink.
From what you have told me, it sounds more like a hardware problem than a software problem.
