I've had a couple of Sony's and they were great. Most of the newer one take the mini DVD's. For about $600 you can get her a pretty good one. The prices have come way down in the past year.
They would be compatable with a Mac. I believe pretty much all Macs have a fireware (1394). Just take a look at the specs and it will say on the info card of box.
