I see that people page you in the tech forum and I know this is the wrong forum feel free to move after hopefully you can help.
I have a friend who has cable modem @ home. She uses a desktop ( windows XP ) Keeps losing connectivity and then getting booted offline ( within 5 to 10 minutes she says.)
provider has replaced modem 3 times, to no avail.
She said she can see the connectivity monitor go from max bars to no bars as she is online.
When her daughter plugs her laptop into the signal ( vista ) she can stay online all day-all night.
I had her disc cleanup and de-frag ( the extent of my knowledge )
ANY SUGGESTIONS?

You say her bars go from max to nothing. That sounds like she is using a wireless card instead of a wired card. A wired card would not show signal strength. Are these bars on the cable modem or is it on the computer?
She may need need to replace her network card. At least that is what is sounds like.
Give me some more info

Sounds like they put a USB ethernet adaptor on her computer. Tell the tech guys to put another ethernet adaptor on her computer. Perferable that it's internal.
You say her daughter plugs her laptop into the signal. Does she use a cord that goes from her computer to the modem? The same cord that goes to her moms computer? Or it it wireless?

I went over to her house to get first hand knowledge of what was going on rather than through the telephone.
I boot up computer, get on line, and sure enough signal fades and disappears.
Mom calls daughter down with her laptop, daughter comes down and I don't have a signal
Daughter then informs us that she forgot to bring the Ethernet cable down that she had been using downstairs
Mother was tempted to throw the child out the window
Daughter knew mom was having problems, but never mentioned that when she got online ( and stayed online ) she was using her own personal Ethernet cable.
Mom went out got new cable, and all is well
Thanks for the help and suggestions gentlemen
