    Guys

With less than a month before the WC starts I wanted to start this thread for those who are new to betting soccer. Please feel free to leave questions regarding general soccer wagering. Questions like "How far do you think Belgium will advance?" will not be answered by me in this thread. (others may comment if they like) I am a regular in the main soccer thread and want to provide this thread to enhance the knowledge of the bettor. We were all new to wagering on soccer at some point and learning the basics can help make the experience more enjoyable and hopefully profitable. This is for the first timers out there or those that bet on soccer say....I don't know...EVERY FOUR YEARS OR SO.Hopefully this will help your interest in the game and you will be around in the main soccer forum after the WC is done.If you are a regular soccer bettor and would like to contribute answers to posted questions, please do so.NO QUESTION IS TOO DUMB. Like I said before, we were all new at some point.

With that I would like to say good luck to all and happy wagering!

Been filling out a bracket type pool for the WC, but I'm uncertain as to how the matchups are determined in the final eight. I understand A1vsB2 etc in the final 16, but I don't know how things go after that. Thanks in advance.

    It's just a standard, pre-determined bracket format.

    1A vs 2B
    1C vs 2D

    1E vs 2F
    1G vs 2H

    1B vs 2A
    1D vs 2C

    1F vs 2E
    1H vs 2G

Use this link, and click on "Second Stage" it will take you to the bracket.

So no questions on how to bet soccer?

So when the WC starts we shouldn't see questions like:

"Why did I lose my bet when I had Germany ML and they tied?"

    or

"The 3rd goal was scored in extra time why did my over not win??"

It seems like we get these and other questions every 4 yrs for the WC or a major tournament.

    BOL guys

if I choose a team to qualify does the wager only win if they finish second in the group? i.e if I choose Portugal to qualify but they win the group does the wager cash? Sounds like a stupid  question but wagering in soccer sometimes has some stupid rules.

IF YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT QUALIFYING FOR THE KNOCKOUT STAGE OF THE TOURNAMENT AS A PROP BET,THEN YES IT SHOULD COUNT BECAUSE THE TOP 2 TEAMS QUALIFY FOR THE NEXT ROUND
    .
ONCE IN THE KNOCKOUT STAGE YOU MAY SEE A LINE LISTED "TO ADVANCE" THIS MEANS WHICHEVER TEAM WINS THE GAME AND ADVANCES WINS THE WAGER...THIS MEANS THEY CAN ADVANCE BY WINNING IN EXTRA TIME OR ON PENALTIES..AND IS DIFFERENT THAN TAKING A TEAM TO WIN ON THE ML WHICH MUST BE DONE IN 90 MIN + INJURY TIME.

    HOPE THIS CLEARS THINGS UP

    BOL

yeah I was just unsure how it works for WC betting. im using bet365 and it shows the groups like this

    Group A

Win Group          Qualify            Bottom Of Group

    Brazil                   1.22                     1.040                 81.00

    Cameroon           26.00                    5.00                   1.90

    Croatia                 8.50                     2.10                   4.00

    Mexico                 10.00                   2.25                    3.40

I just don't want to pick a team to qualify and if they win the group the wager loses lol.  like when I bet Real Madrid to win the champs league final and because I picked ML the wager was a loss. thanks for your help

Jim thanks a lot for this thread, many folks can get answers to their questions.

    Here is mine,

Since it's called world cup and it's in Brazil, does this actually mean Brazil is part of the world?

The first two teams qualifing from the group. So if you bet ''to qualify'' doesn't matter if your team finnishing first or second.
If you bet ''to win the group'', your team have to win the group, to win your bet.
If you bet ''bottom of group'' your team have to finish fourth at the group.

In soccer counts the result in 90 minutes. The European Champion's League Finale, ended 1-1 in 90 minutes. So the right pick was tie or X.
What happened in over time, doesn't affected to ML bets.

To bet in soccer games is more exciting and difficult, than to bet NFL, NBA, or any other US sport
Just try to make it for a couple of years and after you 'll see how easy are the US sports.

"The 3rd goal was scored in extra time why did my over not win??"

It seems like we get these and other questions every 4 yrs for the WC or a major tournament.

    BOL guys

So the add-on time at the end of all soccer games dont count towards your bet? for instance i have Croatia +1.5 and to draw tomorrow. if it hits 90min and croatia is down by 1 and in the extra time allowed Brazil scores again do i lose my bet?

There is no shootouts in the groups stages right?

NO, there is no shootouts in group stages. There is only 90 minutes plus add time, no extra time in group stages.

How much vig or juice do the books make in soccer[on average with online books] after the 3 outcomes are figured.

say you pick brasil ml and it goes into overtime and they win... do you win your bet still or lose because they didn't win in regulation?

If betting a side  say for example  -1/2 -1 -110  what would the payout be on $110 wager.   Would it pay half if the fav won game by 1 goal?  I rarely bet soccer so pardon the dumb question! Thanks fellas!

Pls break down various scenarios based on this example with wager being 110/100.   Thanks!

Injury time is the time added on to  the end of the game.Extra time is basically overtime....It's the two 15 min periods at the end of the 90 minutes that is played if the game is tied....This will not come into play until the knockout stage.

Most books offer lines as 90+ injury time this means the wager is graded at the end of the 90+ whatever the result may be.

The confusion will come in the knockout stage when someone has a wager on for example Brazil vs.Germany and they bet on the Brazil ML and the game is tied 0-0 at the end of the 90+ and it goes to "extra time" and in extra time Brazil scores and wins the game 1-0. The person will think they won their bet....WRONG. Moneyline bets are only for the 90+. In this instance, the person that picked the DRAW line would have won because it was 0-0 at the end of 90 minutes.

To avoid this situation happening to you, ask your book if they have a "to advance" line available. This option means that whichever team advances to the next round is graded as the winner, regardless of if it was in 90+, extra time, or via penalties.

Hopefully this clears some things up.

one last question for me!! :D

i see that there are spreads on the game. I know if you bet the ML on say Team A and it ends in a tie you lose your ML bet. But what if there is a spread bet that is a pickem? I see that at my book for Ecuador vs Switzerland, i notice that the PK for switz is at -139 so if i bet that and they tie do i lose my bet?

    Pk'em and ML are different.

On a PK, a draw is a PUSH. On ML, draw is a loss.  That's why I am sure with your book, the ML payout on the Swiss is higher than the PK payout.

A pk bet will be refunded in the result of a tie if it is placed under the "goal line spread" category at your book

A pk bet probably wont show up under "90 minute game lines" category but will instead be called a ML. This is where you would lose if the game ends in a tie but books name things differently so be sure to check when placing the bet if a TIE result is available in the same category you are in.

When betting the pk wager as you asked about, there should only be two options avail for a TIE to push your bet:

    Switzerland PK
    other team PK

In each half of a soccer match there are minutes added for injuries, unexpected delays, subs, etc.  Usually 1-2 minutes in the 1H, and 3-5 min in the 2H.  This time is ADDED to each half and all wagers you make include this time.  So yes, scores in this time DO affect all wagers you make.

Where things can get confusing for any soccer wagering newbies is AFTER the group play when we get to the bracket "knockout" round, as there can be no draws.  In these matches, you still have the "added" time as noted above, but if the match ends in a draw, then there will be two 15 minute OT halves played (no sudden death).  Those extra 30 minutes for most wagers DO NOT COUNT.  If still tied, then it goes to PK.  There are some wagers you can make that will include all of that, but most match wagers are for REGULATION TIME ONLY.  That is, the regular 90 minutes plus the added time for injury.

When we get to that point, if you aren't sure, ask before you wager.  Generally, the ML/Spread/Total wagers are going to be regulation only and any wagers that DO include the OT portion will say something like "France to advance (-140)"  meaning they just have to get to the next round, regardless of how.

    Hope this helps.

If the ML for one team is +150 why is the ML for the other team sometimes +195 too? I'm just using a random line. The draw is also around +200. Does that mean that it's such a coin flip team that they could end in a draw? And also if a team is pk, does that mean a draw doesn't result in a loss?
