There are ways to play defensively for the 0-0.  This is not it.

The shape is terrible except to do one thing - clog up the goal.  When they win the ball, they have nowhere to go.  Everyone is bunched up defending, so there are no outlets on the counter attack.  They try going backwards, and eventually the GK boots it 60 yards out of bounds to let Italy try again.

This is not going to last for 90 minutes.
