Reason I also ask is because my book only offers the asian handicap lines. 70 cents not worth the risk?

    Couple of notes....

I started betting France back when they were PK +105.  LINK.

But I will say this - by me saying "most likely result" doesnt mean that a 0-0 is also not likely.  In other words, if I had to guess, I think France either gets a goal early, the game opens up, and they toast England (most likely).

But I also think England will play Chelsea style and try to pack back as much as possible - afterall - if they are doing this against Belgium and Norway in friendlies, Im not sure why they wont in the Euros.  It can be tough to break that down.

So the insurance on the draw keeps me interested not because I think France doesnt out-talent England all over the field - but because of potential tactics in a first round game that could furstrate France.

bet you've been looking forward to this tourney well since the World Cup

even though I have a sense of hope and optimism for Ireland I don't think they'll come dead last in the group
Trappa has made them tough to beat and they should pick up at least 3 or 4 points which may be enough to qualify depending on other results
I think a win against Croatia and maybe a draw and a loss against v Italy & Spain would be my best guess
Also all 3 (if not at least 2) of Irelands games to go under 2.5 looks solid

also like Russia to win their Group

    have a good one

I keep hearing that nobody is going to score on Ireland - and that is somehow the way they will get out of a group that includes Spain, Italy, and Croatia.  Im just not buying it.

    We will see...

    GL in the tournament.

Russia looks to be the play there.

    Agree 100%.

    Hey Vanzack...

Followed you during last WC... Been Really Excited for this Euro to begin. I figured I'd tell you my thoughts and see what you and everyone else thinks....

First... I agree with Russia.. (idk if they win the group for sure.) BUt they are Dangerous. I saw them 20:1 odds at one site and I like it bc if they can get to the semis like they did in 08' then Id hedge and make money. But my site is offerign 16:1 odds... so Im wondering if its worth it to make that bet...

Group B: I think I have a Strong Play in the Denmark Netherlands game.... First everyone is calling this the group of Death... and like you predicted Denmark will come in last with 0 pts. ( I think thats most ppl's perception)  So this is how I envision this...  Euro 2012 kicks off on Friday with lack luster games.... But then THE FIRST GAME On SATURDAy when everyone is watching (and wants to bet) They see the almighty Netherlands against  the worst team in Group B) FOR AN AFFORDABLE LINE OF - 175 ( I sickly think this line will DROP) An Average Joe will say Id lay that price bc no way Netherlands doesnt win... Something Tells me Netherlands will control the game but not be putting in goals galore... and maybe when it is 1-0 NEtherlands... Denmark will Steal a goal and then to prevent anything worse happening they go a little conservative... Sorry for making you Read all this... Basically my Play of the DAY will be DENMARK + 1..  The way the OVer under is for the game... makes me think the final score will be 1-1..... I just feel "Everyone" knows NEtherlands is better... so why would they not take them at an affordable - 175... or at WORST -1 for Even money.. (bc how can Netherlands not beat Denmark... I just feel Everyone (sqaures or people who DONT REALLY REALLY know soccer) will Bet this game... They will take Netherlands ML  Netherlands -1 and Probably the Over in the game...     I think DENMARK + 1 is a play and maybe a small play on the Draw...  Let me know waht you think sorrry for the long write up, im just really excited for the EUros...

Thanks.  Everything is fine - not health or anything like that - just committments I cant get out of.  Stuff that normal people think is fun, but people like me think "why the fuck do I have to go to this when I could be in Poland!"

Dont be sorry - love the discussion....

First off Russia.  its starting to scare me that everyone sees them winning this group but +165 is still available.  But I just dont see it any other way.

I dont disagree with the Denmark analysis - first round games can be very tricky.  But the talent disparity between the Netherlands and Denmark is huge.  Denmarks problem is always defense - and they lost their first choice keeper (Sorensen) in the game vs Brazil a couple of weeks ago.

Dont forget that Denmark played the Netherlands 2 years ago in the very same exact position in the World Cup opening round game.  The Dutch won 2-0, but it really wasnt even that close - I remember watching the game and noting just how bad the Danish defense was.  And I really dont have much reason to believe things have changed.

So I cant blame you terribly for wanting to take Denmark +1, it makes sense to me - but I cant do it.  I dont have any reason to believe that this Denmark team is any better than the last - their disorganization in the back will be their undoing - and if anyone can pick that apart with precision it is the Dutch.

BTW - I highly recommend this article.

    1. For underdogs, being defensive and organised, then playing on the break is the best bet

Fans of outsiders in this competition have often complained that they’re not passing the ball well enough and that they want to see a more expansive game. That might be personal preference in terms of aesthetics, but the current success as Spain shouldn’t be seen as the template for more minor football nations in this competition.

Recent underdogs who have proved successful have generally been very defensive, have allowed themselves to be dominated, then relied on counter-attacking and set-pieces. Continental champions Greece in 2004 and Zambia in 2012 had the lowest pass completion rate of any side in the tournament. Uruguay weren’t quite so extreme in World cup 2010 and Copa America 2011, but were very reactive. For the likes of Ireland, Czech Republic and Ukraine, playing ‘good football’ is not on the agenda.

Being a knockout tournament, you can get far simply by being hard to beat – Paraguay reached last year’s Copa America final with five consecutive draws.

    2. Strikers don’t need to be prolific to be part of a winning side

In 1998 Stephane Guivarc’h spearheaded the victorious French side despite not scoring in the entire tournament, in 2006 Luca Toni did something similar, only scoring in one game. Even Spain in 2010 didn’t see their starting striker score in any matches – David Villa only scored in games where he’d started on the left, and Fernando Torres didn’t score.

In international football the striker is often a target man and a hold-up player rather than a brilliant poacher, and the Golden Boot might be won with as few as four goals.

    3. The schedule will be important

This has been touched on before – the draw was important not just because of who each team was drawn against, but because some sides will have a serious advantage in terms of preparation time.

    4. Club connections are vital

Spain depended a lot on Barcelona at the last World Cup, Italy had good club connections (Pirlo-Gattuso, Cannavaro-Zambrotta, Totti-Perrotta) thoughout the side too. Football is, more than ever, based around familiarity and cohesion when it comes to passing moves. Club football has never been so superior to international football, and it’s now obvious that international sides suffer by not having enough time to work on attacking moves as club sides.

Therefore, it’s clear to see that Russia have built upon Zenit and CSKA players and the Czechs have built on (ex-)Plzen players, for example. There are many more instances.

    5. Lesser nations don’t have stars

With the exception of Zlatan Ibrahimovic (and a couple of younger players like Christian Eriksen who haven’t yet proved themselves on the international stage) the outsiders in this competition don’t have a single world-class figure to build the side around.

That, to a certain extent, has always been the case. But there is no Gheorghe Hagi, no Hristo Stoichkov, no Pavel Nedved, no Zlatko Zahovic, no Marc Wilmots – players who, around ten years ago, utterly dominated their side and played a huge part in their success or failure. This time around, coaches of outsiders have stressed the importance of playing as a team to maximise ability, having acknowledged the lack of top-class players.

    6. Various sides are atypical of their nationality

Holland aren’t very Dutch, Germany aren’t very German, Italy aren’t very Italian, Sweden aren’t very Swedish – the list goes on.

    7. The major contenders have made few changes from 2010

Germany, Holland and Spain were the only three European sides to make the World Cup quarter-finals two years ago. Then, there was no talk of a ‘last chance’ for any particular generation of players, and these three nations have broadly kept the same side. Spain have called 19 of the same 23 players, for example (it would have been 21 had David Villa and Carles Puyol been fit) while the German and Dutch sides will be familiar to anyone who hasn’t watched them in the last two years, though each side has been forced to evolve slightly to prevent becoming predictable.

Coincidentally, left-back has been the position each of these three sides has either changed, or struggled to fill.

    8. Little variety in shape

    Tactical interest at the World Cup came from non-European sides: Brazil’s lopsided shape, Chile’s 3-3-1-3, North Korea’s 5-1-2-1-1, New Zealand’s 3-4-3, Uruguay’s various systems, the USA’s 4-2-2-2, Mexico’s 3-4-3 / 4-3-3.

Unless Italy spring a surprise, there probably won’t be any three-man defences. We’re also looking to Italy for the only real chance of a 4-3-1-2. Every other country will play a back four, a central striker, two wide players and a combination of three central midfielders, in some format. It’s 4-4-2, 4-4-1-1, 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1. Any side that is brave enough to try something different may prosper.

Thanks for the insight... I guess I will decide on the day of what  I should do... Another game Id like you to take a look at... is the day after. Spain vs Italy... I am Strongly Considering taking the Under in the game... My feeling is its game 1 of the round... Both teams cant afford a lob-sided loss. Italy tends to play Real defensive when they are going against "superior" talent... They played in 08 in the knock out stages and it was 0-0 AET... (i expect sqaures to lean towards the over especaily if it is set at 2. I just feel its going to be a tight game where both teams will play on the conservative side.

Van...interested to hear your thoughts on Italy...their form has been pretty poor lately and the big off the field problems with the whole betting scandal is sure to be a distraction for the whole squad...I really think this Croatia team has a shot to qualify.

Agree with you on most of the other stuff..but having 2nd thoughts about Russia winning the group...they are a bit old but as long as they are focused against the relatively weak competition in their group and don't take things lightly they should win it.

Just a few comments on your thoughts from me:

I agree with your Denmark and Ireland bets, but disagree on your Italy pick to win the EURO. That team is in turmoil and will be happy to get out of the EURO as soon as possible. I have Spain and Croatia in Group C to advance to the quarterfinals.
England is a team I can't figure out at the moment. They should advance to the quarterfinals. Maybe it helps, that Lampard is out injured, because Gerrard and Lampard didn't play very well together for the Three Lions. The under might be the best bet in the England group games.
I also think that Germany won't win the EURO. I'm not convinced that they are mentally strong to win it all.
I also like Russia to win their first match if not all their games. But there's something wrong with your group preditions. If Russia wins against the Czechs, the Czech Republic won't be able to collect 5 points from their remaining two games.
And don't count out Greece in that group. Their way of playing football is very effective. I'll bet all the Greece games under as well.

    My predictions in short:
Group A: Russia and Greece advance, 3. Poland, 4. Czech
Group B: Netherlands and Germany advance, 3. Portugal, 4. Denmark (0 points and 0 goals)
Group C: Spain and Croatia advance, 3. Italy, 4. Ireland
Group D: France and England advance, 3. Ukraine, 4. Sweden

BOL to you and let's win a lot of money at the EURO 2012

    1.  Greece +.5 at +112 for a small 1 unit.  Most likely result Greece 0 Poland 0 . (written up in post #5)

    2.   Russia to win at +128 for 3 units. Most likely result Russia 2 Czech 0.  (written up in post #5)

    3.  Netherlands / Denmark - Not much has changed since 2010 when these teams met in the first round of the world cup.  The Dutch won that game 2-0, and pretty much dominated.  The Dutch side looks a lot like it did in 2010 - with their weakness at the back - but tons of midfield talent and scoring punch to spare.  Denmarks weakness continues to be their defense - with a very average and slow back 4 - especially in the middle.  I know Eriksen is getting a lot of love - and it is deserved - but I dont see him making enough of an impact to counterbalance the defense.

The Dutch have Germany and Portugal on deck - this is not a typical "not to lose" first round game - this is a must win for them.  I see them coming out with guns blazing.  Im on the Dutch -170 for 2 units.  Most likely score 2-0 (again).

    4.  Germany / Portugal - I have Germany winning the tournament.  They tick all of the boxes for me - no real weaknesses, strong in midfiels, defense, and scoring - team cohesion (Bayern connection), and adaptable style of play.  Unfortunately for Portugal - they havent proven to have the team unity that they need to do well in intl tournaments lately - they are loaded with talent once again - but I fear that unfortunately for them the story after the tournament will once again be disappointment.  A lot of that has to do with the group - it is a huge task to get past the Dutch and Germany - but some of it must have to do with having players like Ronaldo and Nani that dont play well together.  And despite Ronaldos success scoring in spain - it hasnt translated to the intl level - in WC 2010 Portugal scored 0 goals in 3 of their 4 games - scoring only in the N Korea game.

Im going to have a small wager on Germany -.5 -105 for 1 unit, and the under 2.5 -107 for 1 unit.  Most likely result 1-0 Germany.

    5. Spain / Italy -  Spain is the tournament favorite - but I do see some cracks in the armour of the team that has dominated intl soccer for 4 years.  Some key injuries (Puyol, Villa) in key positions might play a large role in this tournament.  I also buy in to the theory that these guys have been going at this for 4 years straight - long club seasons packed with high level games and summers filled with intl duy - there has to be an issue of runnign out of gas - just ask Pep Guardiola.  Im not downplaying that Spain - when on - plays the most attractive midfield football available - but even in WC2010 their lack of scoring punch (with Villa) was evident.  They played in 7 game - won their last 4 by 1-0 scores - and lost 1-0 in their opening game, and scored 2 in the other two games.  So they won the tournament by scoring 8 goals in 7 games.

I love that Spain is made up primarily of players that know each other very well - but despite this they stil lost in their opener of WC10 to Switzerland.  Italy come in with no expectations - a fresher group of younger players - and a manager that plays a slightly less defensive posture than previous Italians.  But if Spain is the current kings of the 1-0 win - Italy was the original - the masters.  Given this group - and that it is an opening game - I just see a very non-open midfield dominated game with a lack of scoring chances.  I will be on Italy +.5 and +1 -105 for 2.5 units.  Most likely final 0-0.

    6.  Croatia / Rep of Ireland - Croatia are somewhat hard to figure for me.  They have some really good players in key spots - and some weaknesses too.  They often sit back and defend and counter - and sometimes play an open style.  Much of this depends on Modric - maybe more than anyone else in this tournament - he is the absolute key to this team and any chance they have.  There are rumors about his fitness not being up to snuff - but who knows for sure - I do know that if he is not 100% this team is not going to do well.  Olic got hurt in the last week - so Jelavik will start up front - and I do see that as a significant loss.  The defense is older and slower - but solid.  They could go on a run, or they could bomb out - just hard for me to predict.

Ireland might be the most anti-football defensive side in the tournament.  Their goal is not to be scored on - period.  Trapatoni (Italian Mgr) has all but said this - and it is probably their best chance of doing well here.  The Greeks in 2004 proved it can be done - as Chelsea did in the CL this year.  My issue is the lack of quality - even on defense - for the Irish.  Dunne (aston Villa) and St Ledger (leicester City) anchor the defense - and both are ordinary in my opinion.  In fact, most fo the squad is pretty ordinary - made up of midtable Pemier league players - there reaally isnt a single player on this squad that you would consider world class in their prime.

Im going to be on Croatia -.5 +120.  I also would favor the under.  Most likely result croatia 1-0.

    7.   France PK -120 (I started betting it back at +110 all the way to -110, but I think this is good all the way to -150) for 5 units. Big one off the bat. Most likely result France 3 England 1.

    8.  Ukraine / Sweden - This is the first game in the tournament that I think should be wide open with a lot of chances on goal.  I will be on the over 2 -126 for 3 units.  Most likely result Ukraine 3 Sweden 1.

Vanzack, just got through Group A, the Greece/Poland game will be a maximum of 2 goals, you think it's worth the juice of -125 for U2? I feel that I will push at worst

I agree with you - but I am seeing -115 out there....  Look around.

But I do agree that I would be very surprised to see 3 goals in this game.  Look - when you bet a total in soccer - you are really betting on CHANCES.  You cant (or it is very difficult) to predict goals - so over the long haul - if you bet unders in games with limited chances and overs in games with lots of chances - you will win your totals.  Could there be 3?  Absolutely - but it would have to be one of those games with 10 total shots and 3 goals.

Netherlands legend Marco van Basten has voiced his opinion that Germany coach Joachim Low has plenty of reasons to be worried about his defence ahead of Euro 2012.

Die Mannschaft conceded five goals in a friendly against Switzerland in May, and Van Basten is not impressed with the likes of Holger Badstuber, Per Mertesacker and Jerome Boateng, stating that Philipp Lahm is the only impressive member in the Germany defence.

"Low has a lot of problems in defence," Van Basten was quoted as saying by Kicker.

"Badstuber is not a centre-back in my opinion as he lacks personality, Mertesacker is not fully fit and has been unimpressive, while Boateng looks shaky, too.

"Lahm is the only constant factor remaining."
