Saying he will be changing the law in NZ. To force all NZers to not be able to bet offshore. Use google for more info.

Don't stand for it. Totally unjust for that to happen for a number of reasons.

    darn off Nathan Guy.

Here's an analogy. x amount of Millions are spent each year from New Zealand people buying clothes from offshore.

They do so largely because there are better deals and a much greater selection of clothes to choose from.

What right should a government have to pass a law to prevent people from doing it? Where does it stop?

Not much different in this betting situation.

This is ironic....this guy gets voted in by the same people who he later on wants to pass a law to limit their choices...is it because too much money is going off shore????

Put your opinions on social media, tell people you against it at the water cooler at work.....whatever......the more people who are against it, hopefully the less likely it is to happen.

To further Dave's analagy, not only are they trying to punish you for daring to buy a pair of jeans from abroad but they're telling you, you have to buy from one specific retailer in NZ.

The 40,000 Kiwis who use offshore bookies need to speak up now or you're about to be screwed.  Emkee is right, it's nepotism at it's worst.  The TAB is ran by a bunch of insider freemasons who milk it for millions, and they are furious that the average Kiwi has the audacity to refuse to be screwed by their racketeering monopoly.

    https://www.radionz.co.nz/news/national/293487/nz-could-recover-millions-from-offshore-racing-bets

The above link is to a radio broadcast (dated January 2016), announcing one of the proposals brought forward by a Government Working Group headed by Nathan Guy:

to charge a fee to online bookmakers dealing with NZ customers. The fee will be structured as follows:

-bets placed (by New Zealanders) on NZ sports and racing will be subject to a fee. That fee, imposed by the NZ Government, will be passed on to NZ Sports and Racing.
-bets placed (by New Zealanders) on non-NZ sports and racing will also be subject to a fee. This fee will be retained by the NZ Government.

The link also provides the logic and explanation for such a law change.

I've read a few articles online about this issue and thought I'd post here to clarify a few points:

    1. How would this actually be enforced?

All online bookies will be required, by NZ law, to pay a fee on the collection of bets placed by New Zealanders.

If this law is passed, offshore bookies are likely to offer less attractive odds to New Zealanders or even instigate the complete removal of New Zealanders from their client base.

    2. Would the legislation actually be enforceable? Offshore gambling companies lie in a different jurisdiction- why should they allow themselves to be dictated by goofball regulators from a tiny island?

The link I provide above explains that the Racing Board expect the major offshore bookies to comply with and respect NZ law, as they showed after recent US restrictions.
I'm not entirely sure I buy into this. While most firms will comply, some (like Pinnacle) who pride themselves in offering the sweetest odds, are somewhat more likely to shun the law if passed.

    3. The proposed law change is aimed at fairly compensating NZ Sports and racing which seems fair enough, but why do offshore bookies need to pay a fee on NZ customers placing bets on non-NZ sports and racing? Surely this surpasses the purpose of the proposal?

I don't know the answer to this question.

Hopefully more information will come to light when the proposal is drafted.

A correction to my post above- the proposal aims to:

"charge a fee to online bookmakers dealing with NZ customers. The fee will be structured as follows:

-bets placed (whether by New Zealanders or non-New Zealanders) on NZ sports and racing will be subject to a fee - 3% of turnover. That fee, imposed by the NZ Government, will be passed on to NZ Sports and Racing.
-bets placed (by New Zealanders) on non-NZ sports and racing will also be subject to a fee - 2% of turnover. This fee will be retained by the NZ Government."

    (see: https://calvinayre.com/2016/04/18/business/new-zealand-seeks-point-consumption-tax-from-international-betting-operators/)

Although I prefer to stick to facts, I feel compelled to interject an opinion at this point- the second fee (applying to non-NZ sports and racing) is an absurdity. There's no basis on which the NZ government should have claim to this- it must be a pure money grab.

Does anybody know if other governments around the world impose fees on offshore betting companies in this seemingly baseless way?
