I dont agree with the quality of field discussion.
The quality of the EQUIPMENT now is far superior, that makes the skill of the sport easier for more players versus what they played with back then.
The skill of players then was better than the skill now, players who were the best had more skill, and skill does not correlate to muscle in golf. Skill is not who can hit it the furthest, it is the complete game and the mental game.
Tiger with the equipment back then would be right in line with most of the others..especially if he didnt have the conditioning he does now (which did not exist then).
The equipment adds more to the skill than the strength or muscle mass someone has.

Agree the equipment is better... But sorry its still now a global game compared to Jacks time... All the equipment improvement in the world still does not make golf an easy game.. Conditioning was not as important to some back then but it still played a part ... ie Gary Player... But your take just proves the point of better players today then in Jacks time.. Players today are just better golfers because they put in the time in all facets of the game.. It may be true and I say MAY be true the top side of players in jacks era may have been more skilled but as far as depth goes its a no brainer that the fields as a whole are light years deeper today then in jacks day..
Be careful with the axe Eugene.

You're right guys like Jesse Owens and Willie Mays had no physical conditioning. It doesn't matter how the new generation stacks up against the old guys, it matters how the greats stacked up against the field in their old time and those guys were working out hard then too.

Wallstreetcappers... This observation from a former pro player is so relevant to this discussion. Thanks for injecting it into this discussion, although most of the other posters on here only use their literacy to read tavern signs and would not comprehend Miller's comment.
Its like what Miller commented on just now..
Players today are about power and length, courses where mental skill and precision are required they dont know what to do.
Players now have a completely different skill set than when the equipment was inferior.

Miller has also said in the past that in the last 5 years the competition and talent on the Tour is at an all time high... He is not splitting the atom here MANY present and past golfers have echoed the same ... Common knowledge.. really.. One only has to visit any good local private country club..Grew up on a golf course ... Twenty five years ago you could go on almost any driving range on a course and see maybe 3 or 4 young kids with great golf swings,,,, Yesterday on the course I play at on the range there were probably over 20 kids who had picture perfect swings ( many taking a private lesson)... Sorry global influence and the popularity of golf with kids now ( when I was young NONE of my friends played... Almost all play now) Make this arguement silly really... No comparison unless you never played sorry but facts are facts.. Not being rude just real.. Stick to the nine hole muni game..
Be careful with the axe Eugene.

Also by the by when Tiger was in his prime the reason he was so great was not his length ( it helped) but not even close it was his PUTTER... He was probably the best putter ever in the history of golf during those years... Drive for show putt for dough... Always been that way in golf and always will be at any level.. PS thats what has left Tigers game now... He always hit it all over the park. But the small stick saved him... . When he putts well now he wins.. Back in his prime he always stroked it well...

[/Quote No but its the start of becoming a great golfer 99% of the time... Not many bad swings on the tour.. Count them on one hand... I can stand on a practice tee and pick out the players from the nine hole beer leauge player.. Not thinking so is the funny part.. Power is generated from a GOOD swing only.. Effortless power its called ... aka Freddy Couples... keep trying.. Hilarious is thinking todays fields are not LIGHT YEARS deeper then in Jacks day.. Claiming equipment makes golf easy... Thats all these kids today have,.. Wake up to the International aspect golf has become.. And the attraction to younger kids today its not a fat rich drunk's game anymore like it was in jacks day.. The Walrus and his kind could not even play on the mimi tour today... Fuzzy Zolller ...would be a caddy today.. and his like..

Well I started playing as a kid with the old equipment, pre-cavity back and for SURE the new equipment cuts the learning curve significantly, it makes the game easier to play for more people..that is a known industry fact.
The easier the game is to play for the masses, the more product and greens fees sold. Its a pure business principal.
What separates a pure swing and skill is all between the ears and that is what goes missing for most current players.

[/Quote No doubt equipment is better... Even more important the ball change... I also played with wooden head woods and the balata balls of old.. But to that end courses are now longer and greens much faster ... Equip helps but its still a tough sport for anyone .. Even the pros.. 93 % of amy golfers still shoot over 90 depite the "new equipment".. We will have to agree to disagree...

quality of the fields are deeper today, i agree.. but in the early 2000's there were the following 4 major winners... rich beem shaun micheel todd hamilton and ben curtis.. those 4 stalwarts combined to win 6 other pga tour events... my point is that until the last 6 or 7 years, the fields arent as deep as everyone always thinks they are... 97-05 ish, also known as the beginning of the woods area, was dominated by 4-5 golfers, woods, mickelson, els, singh, and goosen to an extent... those 4 or 5 were miles ahead of everyone else in betting odds for any event they entered... these days, that changes every 3 months, there is another batch of hot golfers.

Woods never had to compete against the likes of Palmer, Player, Watson, and Trevino as Nicklaus did and until anyone comes up with some names to top those competitors all arguments of his greatness, in my mind at least, are questionable.
Those guys were not amateurs that is for sure.
Please don't mention Mickelson as a great competitor head to head against Woods as far as majors are concerned. He is not even in the discussion.
Also, anyone who really is interested can google Tiger Woods and Balco and his Canadian doctor Anthony 'Tony' Galea.
Drug testing for the PGA was introduced in July of 2008 right after Woods' last win in a major. He has not won a major since... now is that a pure coincidence?
Don't be so naive.

i'm a big fan of Tiger, I won a lot on him in the early 2000's but its hard not to say he's had his day, every major winner can point to say 4 or 5 great shots in that last round they had that got them over the line, I see maybe 1 from Tiger in the last few majors.
It just isnt there anymore, I'm sure he's happy with Vonn but something went from his game after Nordegren and he hasnt been able to get it back and as he gets older, probably never will.
