Well starting out he was in charge during the worst economic downturn in history. I know you don't really believe the president has much control on things such as this, but the bottom line is that it happened on his watch. Now granted the double digit inflation was OPEC related, but to add to that high umemployment, huge interest rates and a of course the hostage situation. He made America so weak by his actions. That was the signal to the Middle East that they could start to attack us and get away with it!!!!!
Back to the interest rates, the prime rate hit 21.5%. That is just ungodly or whatever a person may worship at this time. Add to that the cutting of the defense budget, I'm never a fan of that, no way no how. Congress was completely against him. He had almost no chance of all getting anything passed. Let's not forget about the Panama Canal Treaty. Nothing like giving away the Canal like he did.
Of course how can we forget about the wearing of sweaters and non-lighting of Christmas trees at the White House because he wanted to show to be conserving energy. Yeah, I'm nitpicking now, but come on.

Greenspan and Bernanski have a COMPLETELY different policy when it comes to inflation and federal reserve action. Do you think if the knuckleheads in charge of the Federal Reserve would have been easing versus tightening that we would have gone though the hyper inflation we did?
Please look beneith the surface a little bit and examine more than the end result. The policy the Fed had during the Carter administration was to raise interest rates and KEEP raising them in order to stop inflation. We have NEVER seen that kind of policy since then and rates have not been close to the levels we saw during the Volker years.
If you older guys recall, it wasnt like the inflation just stopped and high rates stopped when Carter left office, it wasnt until Reagan benefitted from a change in Fed chairman and the philosophy of the chairman changed that rates came down.
Bush deserves ZERO credit for the economy. He lowered taxes..well thats nice, but it is the only wheel turning the economy. Trade Deficit- A function of the value of a currency and the strength or weakness of the US economy and the WORLD economy..the federal reserve with their money flow tactics control the value of the currency to a certain degree and the world economy cannot be controlled by just the US..so thats a tough one
National Debt- Now that is somthing a president has control over, especially multi-term presidents
GDP- A function of MANY variables but some are attribuitable to the president..but I would say 10-15% is all
Savings Rate- quite a few inputs to calculate this including opportunity cost, interest rates, alternative investments, recession or expansion in the economy etc..

I first voted for Ike, many years ago. I stood in line in the rain to vote against Jimmy Carter after he showed no initiative at all when Iran seized and held our citizens. However, as a former supporter of George Bush, our present president, I am making him the 2nd or 3rd worst persident behind LBJ and Carter. Our country needs help, now. I do not see any of the Democratic candidates presently running that will help us much although I have to vote for one of them. HELP!!!
