John McCain is NOT running against Michelle Obama....can we agree on that?
And what John McCain has "given" to his country is 26 years in Congress where he has been a staunch Republican.
There are lots of vets (I am one) out there and, fortunately, some former POW's that are still alive...they are not, necessarily, qualified for public office because of their military service...we need to separate John McCain's military service from his public service record...and look at those 26 years....then decide.
I am in independent voter, have always liked John McCain personally and, as a vet of the 60's in Southeast Asia, respected him for the level of his service.
What concerns me more about John McCain, frankly, is his age and the mental slips that are more public now...starting with that one in the mideast when Joe Lieberman had to help him "identify" the enemy, the interview in Florida with the Spanish media was difficult to follow; but, again, when discussing issues that require quick and unprepared responses, he falters with his memory.
I pose this question to all Republicans....Assuming that John McCain's close advisors convinced him to choose a woman to be his running mate, why would Kay Bailey Hutchison (who I respect very much) not have been a much more appropriate choice for a 72-year old man to have "one step from the Oval Office"...
She met with McCain prior to him selecting Palin, it's fair to assume that they discussed the VP selection...did she turn him down?....Do you really believe that Palin has the credentials, especially in this global economy, to be part of the "advise and consent" of Washington? Would you not think that Senator Hutchison, if a woman was to be selected, would be 1000% better in the role of Vice-President and advisor to President McCain?
As an independent, I have more questions of McCain/Palin than I have of Obama/Biden...and that disturbs me greatly. We all need to agree that we, and the world, are not better off now than we were 8 years ago due to the Bush administration....and, as such, I strongly believe that we need to have a very strong conviction that if we elect another Republican, it will not be..at least in some part...a continuation of the Bush administration.
If we are not 100% certain that McCain can start to remedy what has happened, both here and overseas, then we need to turn to the Democrats for, at least, the next 4 years. Similar to how England votes....we need to have a "no vote of confidence" and change the power in Washington to the other side. The fact that it is Obama is not as important as the fact that it is a Democrat.
Presidents are, in many cases, successful or not...because of the people that they surround themselves with, to offer advice, information, analysis, etc.....I think that we, especially the Reublicans, that Bush surrounded himself with people that were the cause of the problems of this administration and not the solution....just ask Colin Powell what he thinks.
If McCain is going to continue to have alliances with those of the last 8 years that were not "the solution" but were "the cause"...then, once again, we need to elect a Democrat...if that be Barrack Obama, so be it......If John McCain, in the next 46 days, can convince me and other independents that he will renounce the Bush administrations policies and come up with sound ideas to change the last 8 years, he might have my vote...even with my doubts about his mental health....however, at this juncture, I doubt that he will do that because of those behind him that got him this nomination in the first place.
