When
there are complaints about "the system" in Quebec we usually think we
are immune, that it's happening to someone else, to people who are new
to Quebec. Not so.
This week my pharmacist advised me that I
couldn't get my vital prescriptions renewed because he could not find
the paper my doctor gave me before he retired. There were no doctors to
take over his practice.
I called Westmount Medical Clinic to find
a new doctor and was told that there was not one single doctor who
would take a new patient. I finally found one doctor who was willing to
see me in April 2010.
When I called my local CLSC, I was informed
that there was a waiting list of three years to get a family doctor. I
called the government only to find that my alternatives were either to
go to an emergency room, or take the day off of work and wait at a
walk-in clinic to ask for prescriptions from a doctor who has
absolutely no clue about my medical history. He will not be my family
doctor, but he might "follow up."
After a day on the telephone
getting nowhere, I finally broke down in tears. What has happened to
our system? In what way is our government taking care of us? Every day
I hear stories about how new people coming to Quebec are supported,
educated, medicated, and very well looked after. What about taking care
of the people who pay taxes to support all those programs?
