You are correct about Jefferson's sentiment about the freedom of the press in his letter to Madison.
However, I am pretty sure that exact quote was not in that letter to Madison but in a decades later letter to the Marquis de Lafayette.
But Jefferson initially protested because the Constitution did not specifically have a bill of rights protecting freedom of the press.
The overall issues is that the FA does protect freedom of the press.
But it does NOT give every journalist access to the White House. Presidents can impose legitimate limitations because of capacity, etc.
The legal issue is whether he can do it because of their viewpoint of their reporting.
I am not familiar with exactly what recommendation leads to the claim about removing limits about retaliation. I would have to see that identified.
Certainly reporting has grown more divisive. You can go online to any news source and just read the headlines from various ones and see how they constantly are anti-Trump or pro-Trump; rarely is there just reporting the news nowadays. So, the logical conclusion is to try to limit someone that you feel is agitating or misleading what you say or do on purpose. Whether you should do it in a blanket way or even say why you are doing it is a whole other discussion.
Of course, he has examples. The AP restriction after they refused to starting Gulf of America would be one of his examples.
He is always citing examples of his 'perceived' restrictions are there going back to him banning certain ones form the his first Cabinet meeting, while allowing others in.
You can argue it is a bad and petty look for him to do it but he thinks he has legitimate examples to use to do it.
Saying the majority of negative news coverage is true would have to be substantiated. That is an assertion and not evidence. You would have to decide what constitutes 'negative' coverage, what news outlets, what constitutes 'true', what time period, etc.
November having consequences is speculation and rhetoric at this point.
To be fair I have not read the P2025 stuff, so I will defer to you being an expert on it.
But I am not sure what the analogy about AIDS even means in that context.
But I agree with you that it is a bad look for him to do this even if it is true that all they do is present what he says in a negative manner.
