Guys, what makes us Americans is the way we disagree respectfully. Clint is/was a Republican, so what? He's a great American for trying to get us to rally together.
What I liked about this commercial the most was a guy who has all the money he needs getting gritty with the hard-working Amercans making American cars.
Way to go Clint and way to go Detroit.

That dark street Clint was walking down wasn't Detroit ..The spot was actually filmed in New Orleans and Los Angeles ...not Detroit..
He's right when he say's ...
People are out of work ..they are hurting and they are scared ..
"Yeah, it’s halftime America. And, our second half is about to begin," says Eastwood ...well you know what they do in the second half if things aren't working and players are hurting and scared of losing the game ?
Change the quarterback ....
I understand Clint gave his payment for the ad to charity ..that's very admirable ..but ..
"Get off my lawn" Clint..

"You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is about the end of any nation. and I am more than willing to give a hand up but not a hand out
we have all been on hard times before, maybe not all of us but I would bet most of us here have had some sort of struggle whether it be money, work, relationships etc.............I can say I benefited from a hand up but never a hand out......what would one learn from a hand out???

Lords - All of the anti-communism rhetoric is very counterproductive. Whoever is putting it out is hoping it will continue to be divisive and effective in promoting fear. It's a tactic to get the focus away from the 1%, and have us argue about who has the more 'righteous' political philosophy. It's really nonsense, and it's not going to get anybody anywhere. The first thing that needs to be done is cleaning the government of corruption.
Step 1 - Cleaning out congress of all the corrupt lifetime politicians, and reforming campaign finance laws, conflict of interest laws, Whistleblower protection etc. to ensure the political system is not influenced by big money and big corporations.
Step 2 - Should be organizing a government of the people, for the people. Taking into account some of the policies, and theories behind the policies, that led to the current corrupt political system, such as the reasoning behind the 'corporations are people' movement, among many others.

Step
1 - Cleaning out congress of all the corrupt lifetime politicians, and
reforming campaign finance laws, conflict of interest laws,
Whistleblower protection etc. to ensure the political system is not
influenced by big money and big corporations. ------------ if you remove most of the unconstitutional power that congress has or has taken rather, then you dont need to reform anything. (EPA, SEC, FDA, ATF and on and on...Dodd Frank, Sarbanes Oxley)
if there is no way to profit from favorable laws, then there will be no buying of lawmakers. its not worth the investment to keep some spineless patsy on the payroll if he cant deliver the goods
cleaning up government will not make better government because the system still exists; sort of like when you kill a drug kingpin, there are many others willing to take his place.
the system must be reset or destroyed

Nothing --and I mean NOTHING -- will be changed until we change the framework of the political system. First past the post almost mandates by virtue of its rules only two political parties.
Why not proportional representation?

And not divided on D vs R. Thats BS and most of us know it. Its the State vs You. Either you are for freedom or you are for a police state run by banksters and monsanto. Were closer to the latter
nice monsanto reference. that is one fucked up company that does not get nearly enough notoriety.

This is also a problem, I agree.
It's a problem up here as well.

KOAJ, there is nothing wrong with a government of the people, for the people.
We can debate what role the government should play, but that goes back to the point I made in post #34. We can bicker about who has a more 'righteous' political philosophy all we want, but that's a distraction and is counter productive. First step should be to remove the corrupt politicians, right now, that are in power, right now, drafting laws (right now) that reinforce the current power structure and are aimed to benefit the 1%.

Actually the prostitute catering to the owner is what needs to be changed. If you don't see that things are the worst they've ever been under this fuck, you are blind.

I know you think that the "libertarian" crowd is Kooky, but right now they have the best plan for "resetting" the nation.
I try not to be to dogmatic in my political stances, and have aspects that I disagree with within the Republican party (obviously), and also within the Libertarian party.
But something that I find completely mind boggling, is how Democrats and Liberals think that growing govt, creating more beauraucracy and depts. is going to somehow fix things.
If anything we should be contracting the size of govt.
One Financial regulations office
One domestic law enforcement
One Intelligence
etc.
Part of the reason that govt. gets a pass in their complicit history is that the scope of the federal govt is too wide for those at the top to take notice.
That is the defense for the Fast and Furious and operation gunrunner, that there was no knowledge at the top of these operations. Perfect cover for outright impeachable corruption.

Please note that not once did I say government should be bigger.
My exact words were "get rid of corruption" and "a government of the people, for the people."
Again, (post #34) we can debate what role the gov't should play...but that shouldn't be Step 1...
Also... it's not that I think libertarian ideals are 'kooky' - I understand the logic and reasoning behind them. I just think they are unrealistic, especially in the 21st century.
Notice how we all pretty much agree on the main problems... but it doesn't seem to get us anywhere closer to a resolution.
As always rick

I think that re-structuring that severely shrinks the size of govt is what is needed.
- Reform campaign finance & disclosure laws
- Install conflict of interest laws (This is huge, might as well be the only one you need - right now you literally have legalized corruption)
- Reform lobbyist & PAC etc, laws
- Have whistleblower protection(s)
- Limit the amount of political donations
- Stricter oversight of, and rules for, lawmakers
..as just a start off the top of my head. It would be good to look at what works in other countries that don't have rampant corruption and take a lesson from there, by installing reforms based on what works and what doesn't (evidence).
There must be a million things we can do to fight corruption, it starts by ridding the political system of big money and special interests.
I feel like we've had this discussion before. Round and round we go, while the 1% sucks the economy dry.

disco - you're looking at years and years of finagling in congress to get any of that stuff passed and you are asking the people who it benefits to pass laws against their own best interest. if you think they serve their constituents, you're naive
the system needs to be blown up
congress was debating the Stock Act last week or so...which more or less makes it illegal for Congress to trade on insider info. If i do it, jail time. If they do it, its legal
why do they do it? because they have the power to steer billions the way of their investments
take away that power and you solve everything. return to a very simple article 1, sec 8 duties of the us congress and we are all set...seriously. the world would be a much better and more peaceful place as well

Go kick them out, and install a government of the people, for the people.
Step mutherfucking 1
Then how hard is it going to be pass laws that prevent the corruption
I think my list is a good start and I'm sure you guys would like to suggest some more.
