The Florida State government passed a law adding the paying of fines/fees after we voted on the original bill. It was not part of the original bill. It isn't a common sense issue. It was a crappy bill that was changed after the fact.
This impacts over 770k people in our state which is no small #. It took a judge to over rule a lower court's ruling to prevent these people from voting. It's basically charging people to get their voting rights returned. It's a very slippery slope...
Imagine every deadbeat who owes money being put into this category. What's next ...child support deadbeats?
States do have the right to ban people with a felony conviction from voting, according to a 1974 Supreme Court case, and Florida did until 2018. That November, voters approved Amendment 4, which automatically restored voting rights to anyone with a felony conviction, other than murderers and sex offenders, who had completed their sentence.
But months later, the Republican-led legislature passed a bill that Governor Ron DeSantis signed into law requiring people convicted of a felony to pay all outstanding legal financial obligations before their sentence could be considered complete. In May, a lower court judge found that law unconstitutional , calling it both a “pay-to-vote” system and a “poll tax.” In overturning the lower court, the 11th Circuit found the fines aren’t a tax, in part because they’re part of someone’s sentence.
The vote of Floridians was changed by a judge & the same can happen in your state.
Different kind of "forest". Different terrain. Different vegetation. Texas is flat. "Forests" are sparse and spread out, intermingled with wide open terrain. Forest in the western United States are dense, topographical, affairs with a heavy canopy often times 100 feet high, and at times 200-300 feet high. Less population density as well.
And not only that, Tox, but Texas actually HAS seen an uptick in wildfires. The difference is it's much easier to control the spread of a wildfire in that terrain. Where are live, there's actual forests. I could walk a few miles from my property and be in shit so thick that it's literally impassable unless you're on a hiking trail. Shit too thick to wander of trail when there is a hiking trail. Shit too thick to see the blue sky on a cloudless, sunny day. A fire could smolder in some of these spots for a week before anyone noticed the smoke.

The forests in the west are too dense. More logging and thinning should be allowed but the far left nut job “environmentalists” reign supreme out there.

It's funny you would bring up those articles, Tox, because they jump right into my next point. Tall, dense, old growth forest aren't always the fuel that drives these wildfires. It's often, usually, grasslands and semi-urban "forests" full trees with no commercial value. And that shit is unmanageable. Much of California, between the Sierras and the coastal ranges, for example, is dry grasslands. The thing about these grasses, in a drought stricken state, is that you can clear it, burn it off, and after one day of heavy rain it's growing back. Then after that one day of rain, it,'s drying out and you're back where you've started. There's no incentive nor money to manage this stuff. Like I said, the trees lack commercial value. The land lacks commercial value. There's nothing worth logging. The land in California is rarely flat. You're not running cattle there. It's often not good for growing anything except for shit like grapes, which is a niché thing and expensive as shit to start.
The problem with this issue is it has become political. Trump says says something about raking forests and every Tom and Dick who know nothing about forests tries to defend him. Then you have the timber industry who wants carte blanche in California so they blame lack of commercial foresting. It's bullshit really. Few of the recent wildfires are deep in these forests. And the ones that burn, away from civilization, aren't a huge deal. They are a natural part of the system. Frankly, of the recent fires in California and Oregon, logging wasn't preventing any of them. Don't be fooled, there's plenty of commercial logging in California and Oregon is literally timber country. I can spit in any direction and hit a major sawmill.
I think the drug traffickers deserve a second chance. The rest deserve bullets.

You have no idea what you're talking about. Have you ever been to California or experienced a wildfire? Wild fires, forest fires, do not always burn in actual forests. I just explained this. Logging and "raking the forests" would not have affect most of that 3 mil plus acres. You're just throwing out numbers from echo chamber websites with no real idea of the geography and flora.
