Where testing is taking place, hospitals are packed.
If you did not meet the narrow CDC requirements for testing, you couldn't receive a test. Those requirements were recently changed but were not announced to the general public. More people will now be able to be tested as a result of the changes, Those without insurance will continue to stay at home and die.
Facebook & twitter posts are pushing the conspiracy theory of empty hospitals. Some beds have become available but will quickly be filled again when cancelled surgeries are rescheduled. Other hospitals have cancelled surgeries in anticipation of more covid patients being identified.
On a positive side, there have been less accidents because people are not travelling as much which has allowed some hospitals a much needed breather. However the more testing that takes place, the more positive results will be identified.
Any empty beds is a temporary situation as this virus appears in waves and affects communities of all sizes.
Rhetorical? Obviously, we have determined this is the mix that we can leave with. 160 mph would kill too many; 10 mph would cost too much in time etc. This is the balance we have decided to live with.
Of course, the numbers were over exaggerated for the expectations at the hospitals. But in their defense it does add on top of flu season etc. And with the peak of Corona all bunched up it could have been a legitimate concern.
Yeah, NYC royally screwed up in their handling of the Chinese Virus. They reacted too slowly AND had the misfortune of having the busiest public transportation system in the country. That's a bad combination.
On an unrelated note, about 1/4 of the u.s. deaths have been in nursing homes.
When the virus started spreading in March, Italy was bad and NY soon followed.
I just tried connecting the dots to come up with theories...their are lots of Italians in NY. Italians are close by nature. Hugs, kisses and handshakes are common. Even men greet each other with kisses on the cheek.
Just something that crossed my mind then. Not sure if it's the sole reason, but maybe there's something to it.

For example: a bad flu season kills 80,000 out of a population of 320 million. That's 0.00025. With that death rate, half the population is too lazy to even bother getting a flu shot. Jump up to 0.00075 (three times as bad for COVID maybe) and we voluntarily destroy our economy and send people into food lines. Where's the logical leap from "won't even get a flu shot" to this? Statically similar.

Every one of those weeks - 2020 deaths below and in many cases significantly below the average.
In the US, the leading causes of death are heart disease (roughly 23% of all deaths) and cancer (roughly 21% of all deaths). Are these deaths suddenly not happening in 2020?
We know more now that we did in Week 7. The numbers don't appear to support a complete lockdown and trashing of the economy anymore. Perhaps wait one more week in the harder hit areas like New York City, implement policies to protect nursing homes, then open it up and let's get back to business.
