U.S. President Donald Trump has recently announced that the government will purchase 100 million doses of the experimental COVID-19 vaccine developed by Moderna. The vaccine is currently at the advanced stage of development.

In a separate statement made by the biotechnology company, its mRNA-1273 vaccine is reportedly worth over $1.53 billion. The company is also planning to offer the federal government an option to purchase additional doses of over 400 million. The country has initially invested $955 million for the development of this vaccine, bringing its total investment to nearly $2.48 billion.

The mRNA-1273 vaccine has reached the late-stage, human trials. In this human trial phase, the company will examine the safety and efficacy of the vaccine in 30,000 subjects or volunteers. It anticipates obtaining the results as early as October 2020. In addition to Moderna, the U.S. government also has signed deals with other vaccine developers such as Johnson & Johnson, and Pfizer.

Trump has reportedly stated that the country has invested in the top 6 vaccine candidates for their effective development and rapid delivery to date. He further added that the military is set to accelerate the vaccine delivery once it is fully approved for use by the U.S. FDA.

Furthermore, the U.S. Department of HHS (Health & Human Services) had previously announced its plan to invest $1.95 billion in BioNTech and Pfizer to produce 100 million vaccine doses, with the option to obtain additional 500 million doses. HHS also announced that it would invest $1 billion in J&J for 100 million vaccine doses, with the option to gain an additional 200 million doses.

The vaccine agreements signed between several companies and the U.S. government are part of its efforts to accelerate the distribution, manufacturing, and development of vaccines against the coronavirus, under the ‘Operation Warp Speed’ program.

Stephane Bancel, CEO of Moderna, has stated that the company would price the vaccine ‘well-below value’ during the pandemic and price up at the market value once the virus is contained.

The vaccine should be ready by Oct 2020 Lorena is set to delivered 1 billion doses by jan1st 2021 for world wide distribution.

Will be interesting to see 4 things when a proven-working vaccine is found:

1/  What percentage effective is it?  (no vaccine is 100%)

2/  WHEN will it finish trials and be ready for mass production?

3/  How long will the process take to distribute the vaccine to health centres in all states?

4/  Will an extremely HIGH percentage of the pop then get innoculated? (it is NOT mandatory)

According to CDC, the number and rate of child cases have been "steadily increasing" from March to July. While Pres. Trump continues to desperately push schools to reopen in-person class, however his own son, Barron Trump will NOT attend in-person class in this fall*. Go figure.

If Moderna (NASDAQ:MRNA) and its peers take too long to get their current coronavirus vaccine candidates fully developed and approved, they could pay the price. The government is mandating that they meet ambitious targets for this. If not, they'll receive reduced payments from public-sector entities.

Moderna, for example, will receive $1.5 billion from the government if its MRNA-1273 candidate is approved for use by Jan. 31, 2021. If not, that payout will be chopped to $1.2 billion.

Reuters reported on Friday that similar conditions are in place for other companies busy developing and testing vaccine candidates to block the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus and/or the disease it causes, COVID-19.

Despite decline in coronavirus testing in the US, number of cases are increasing because of high positivity rates.  Actually, testing is inadequate and below 5 million tests daily needed to control virus spread.   South Korea credits early extensive testing and contact tracing for safely reopening economy without lockdown.  Alternative to vaccine is more people wearing masks, cleaning surfaces, avoiding large crowds and practicing social distancing.

 According to related news, Switzerland will purchase 4.5 million doses of the new crown vaccine from Moderna. As patients need to inject two doses each time they are vaccinated, it is expected that this purchase can provide vaccines to 2.25 million people.
