This is the one hand I never see coming. It's always in the back of my mind but I just refuse to believe that someone could possibly have flopped a set of 2-9's (even though I have done this many times and slowed played it for huge profit).

    Example is:
    player 1- AsKs
    player 2 - 3c 3h

preflop - player 1 raises, player 2 calls.
    flop - Ah Kh 3d
(player 1 bets to prevent a flush chaser, player 2 calls or raises. either way, you will most likely still be in the hand).
    turn - 6c
(player 1 feels alot better that no flush cards and didn't help if on a straight draw off the flop so player 1 bets even bigger attemption to knock player 2 off any draw. player 2 calls)
    river - 9s
(player 1 thinks he has the hand and bets again....player 2 reraises and the thought of trips pops in your head right away and by now you have so many chips in the pot that you have to call.)

I always feel that there is no way to prevent getting slow played on trips when you are attempting to protect your hand from any draws but there must be something that can be done to limit the money lost.

    Let me hear everyone's opinion....

Nope, you are pretty much going to go bust every time.  Unless you are playing for HUGE stacks(even then doubtful b/c it's all relative) you are still going to go bust.  With the way that hand enfolded, both players would be all-in on the flop, nobody is good enough to lay top 2 pair down with AK.

I am proud to say that i folded top pair with K kicker last night in a cash game against trip 8's. Albeit, not AK (two pair) but still the will power to fold.

    me: KQ off (late position)
only one caller so i raise the pot. Opponent calls.
    flop: K,8,9 (rainbow)
    he checks, i bet pot.
    turn: 3 (forget suit)
he checks, i bet pot. he reraises me double my bet. I wait til the end of the clock and fold and show. he shows me he had pocket 8's.

I'm not gonna sit here and say i predicted he flopped the set but i thought maybe he played 89 suited or AQ. Either way, in the past i probally would have called. The mistake on his part was reraising me I feel but im guessing he wanted me out on any draw that i might have been on.

Crus, you're right....tourny it is alot easier to fold thos hands bc you only get one shot.

Maybe I'm an idiot, but I've seen plenty of hands where a continuation bet is called by the pre-flop caller and then the turn is checked by the pre-flop raiser even if it's a blank (at least in tournament play).  If the pre-flop caller is chasing, then you'll lilkely know where you are at on the river.  If they are calling a flop like that with A-Q or less, then you are WAY ahead anyway.  I'm not saying you can avoid calling on the river and losing another bet anyway, but I'm not sure you have to lead out 3 times in a row (at least in a tournament).  No need to make a monster pot even with a hand like top 2 pair.  And why bet on the river if you're not sure where you stand?  How likely is a call if they are beat bad and then how do you deal with a raise?

One thing that could help is how quick he made the call after the turn and flop.  If he calls really fast, then he is probably on a draw.  If he takes some time before calling, then it is more likely he has more of a hand, but whether it is a weak ace, 2 pair, or a set, who knows, unless you have a history with him.

    great points thorpe.
I play a ton of online poker and have noticed that the timing of the calls, checks, raises can be tells. I also found it invaluable to keep notes on each player you sit and play with. This forces you to really study betting habbits, starting hands, raising hands, etc. I would def recommend keeping notes on each player and even putting "dead money" players on your friend list and seeking them out.

Yep.  He could have easily had a lower 2-pair or a straight or flush draw.  And you could suck out with with an ace or king on river.  I would just call on the river if he leaves you chips.  But you probably can't get away from your hand.
