How much should you buy-in at a table?

I thought I heard you should buy-in for a certain number of big blinds...

If I was playing a 3-6 table or a 5-10 table how much should I buy-in?

You play limit/no limit? You playing online or in person?

i could be wrong but most casinos i think have a cap on how much you can buy in for, at least that was my experience when playing 1/2 NL. Some had a max of 200 and others 300

At NL/PL tables we should always buy in for the max.

At limit tables I usually buy for 25-30 BB's.

Some people think that's over kill for a limit table but I hate to re-buy and I never want to run out of chips in the middle of a hand.

I always buy-in for 100 big blinds.
