The absence of their captain has cost City the title. Even manager Roberto Mancini has accepted the Premier League crown is out of reach. The 10 points dropped from the six league games missed by the team's inspirational leader finished the defending champions. Now they're in a different fight. They must beat Newcastle to stave off the threat for second place from Chelsea. History suggests a comfortable home win. City virtually clinched the title at St James's Park last season and are unbeaten in the last 12 meetings, winning 10 of those. Newcastle haven't beaten them away from home since Alan Shearer's winning goal in September 2000. Alan Pardew's team have also been boosted by the return of a talismanic defender to fitness and form recently. Steven Taylor's call up by England ended an injury-blighted year. With the new signings, the Toon defence looks potentially tough to beat.
