the Islanders, much like my Penguins a few years back, have "banked" a lot of young talent and could "turn on a dime" as soon as next season. Al Montoya looked good in goal late so they could move DP IF anyone would have him at the price ( maybe the Flyers would bite)

John Tavares continued to build and Michael Grabner had a late breakout season. would have probably had a better year IF you could have kept people healthy. need the likes of Kyle Okposo, who I think is a potential star "power forward", for the whole season. no Mark Streit on D sure didn't help either. think my Pennies, with Jordan Staal out early then Crosby and Malkin going down half way thru, were the only team to have more "key injuries" than the Isl's this season

bottom line is, "A 'yes' vote would secure the Coyotes in Arizona for a year but wouldn't altogether dash Winnipeg's hopes. The Atlanta Thrashers are also for sale right now, and the current owners are anxious to sell before incurring another year of losses in Georgia.

Though time in running out, the Thrashers owners could sell the team to Winnipeg's True North Sports and Entertainment for relocation. But a deal would have to happen quickly in order for the team to be set-up in its new home for the 2011-12 season."

article says the "It's believed Mayor (of Glendale) Scruggs will have enough (YES) votes to carry the decision forward", BUT I personally think that with the current attitude about "govenment spending" down here in the States, esp in a "conservative" state like Arizona, ANY public official perveived to be spending tax payer money on "foolishness" will get their ass thrown out of office the next election

also think the "Glendale wants to buy another year, allowing it to either complete a sale with Hulsizer or find someone else to buy the team, although lack of time has hardly been the major stumbling block in this saga" is telling. I think Glendale and the NHL would be well advised to REALLY investigate this "hot money" hedge fund guy Matthew Hulsizer. who IS he REALLY? kind of smells like a Bruce McNall re-run to me.

Bettman is a joke.  He's supported guys like McNall and DelBaggio (both crooks) - but he doesn't like Balsillie (who might be a dick - but he'll spend money to put a winner on the ice).  And Bettman says he has no problem with Canada, but Bettman did NOTHING to save the teams in Winnipeg and Quebec City (as well as Hartford - I miss the Whale) but he's done whatever he can to keep teams in Atlanta - Phoenix - and two teams in Florida - which is a joke.

Bettman has to go.  For the good of the game. 

 

Being that I am one of the five Thrashers fans that exist (and admit it), I do not believe the Thrashers will be going anywhere next year.  The six owners that make up the Atlanta Spirit can't decide anything (except to keep Ramsay, which tells you how smart they really are).  All want to sell, but none can agree to who or how much.  I know Atlanta doesn't have as much tradition (if any) compared to other hockey towns, but if the team is competitive, they would be supported.  Terrible management, awful decisions, etc is why they are not supported.  If it happens again to me (Flames the first time), I am jumping off a bridge.

Since Bettman has been on the job, John Spano lied about his net worth to buy the Isles (Bettman and the league didn't catch on until it was too late) and then (I'm cutting and pasting this, so I apologize for the fact that some of it seems to be happening now, when all these things have been resolved...

Yet here's what's happened since Spano stained the NHL's reputation: Sabres owner John Rigas has gone to prison for fraud; former Devils part-owner Dennis Kozlowski is in jail for the same; and former Sharks owner Greg Reyes this year was sentenced to prison for backdating securities filings.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has said it's probing the business dealings of Anaheim Ducks owner Henry Samueli and Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk. (Both Samueli and Melnyk are vigorously denying the accusations.)

Bettman was left wincing last week when it was reported that new Predators part-owner Boots Del Biaggio has been accused in a civil lawsuit of fraud over a $3 million loan. Del Biaggio also is under investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice, the San Jose Mercury News reports. Del Biaggio's lawyers have said he is a "good and generous person" and that he would cooperate with any formal investigation.

And yet Jim Balsillie isn't deemed worthy to be an owner.  I guess he hasn't spent enough time in jail yet...

Meant to add they would be supported as much as Nashville and Carolina (other southern teams).  Trust me, they have more support than the Panthers---I've been to their games.

watched a LOT of Thrashers games this year because I'm a fan of "Da South Chicago Boids" like Andy Ladd, "BIg Biff "and "Soapie" (who's now been traded to Montreal). also a HUGE fan of Evander Kane. kid would be a superstar in a real NHL market.

point is, early season when "South Chicago" was making noise and winning games with high scoring style, esp in the southeast, I saw VERY FEW FANS at their home games so I think your premise is false. Atlanta has NEVER been a "hockey town" going back to the Flames. just NOT going to happen there OR Glendale OR, for that matter, South Florida. only time the Panthers have a decent gate is when a team with fans who travel is in town

Evander Kane would be a superstar in a small market like Atlanta.  Hes one of those players that if you throw him on a team with the all stars, he would shift to the back.  He thrives when he is the "chief" but he would tend toward the median with a stud lineup

Well I don't mean next year, I mean they have a much better shot at moving than the Yotes.

Also they did have some pretty good runs but the fans stayed away. They ranked 27th in attendance this year.  But it was at least better than the Jackets, Yotes and Isles.

both bettman and david stern are scumbags.  just looking at them makes me itch all over.

In all due respect, I agree with a lot of your points.  The Thrashers were playing pretty good hockey at the beginning season (and the attendance did suck).....however, when you have only had one season in making the playoffs (then get swept---and it was embarrasing), owners who dating back to the beginning of 08 season threat with moving---I can understand fans not getting behind them.  For me, it is hockey.  I will support them no matter what. It just sucks for me, cause I won't have a team to root for with my heart. More of sadness for me since I know it is coming sooner or later. 

LeRink--they do have some fun players to watch.  Most of them are pretty good guys in the community (from what I hear). 

These are just my thoughts and many have not agreed with me in the past, but gary doesn't have any issues with Balsille because gary is just the Leafs hand puppet.  The owners of the NHL (Leafs) knew like everyone else that the Blackberry billioaire had no interest in buying the Yotes and keeping them in Phoenix.  The ink wouldn't even be dry and the team would've been whisked away in a private jet to Southern Ontario.  The billionaire Leafs will NEVER EVER NEVER EVER accept competition in their   market...NEVER!!!.  The league will fold before that would ever happen.  Also if a team moved in S Ontario, the next team to run into financial difficulties would be the Sabres.  More than half their fans are from the Golden Horseshoe.  Also, the Leafs would have to win a game here and there because they would lose their fan base in a heartbeat to a local winner due to STARVATION!!   JMO

Would Love to see Winnepeg Jets back in the league.  I remember as a little tyke in NY I actually thought the Jets had the coolest uniforms at the time(as well as the North Stars).
